        • @tonka:
          Great tips

        • @tonka: I'm looking at the online form for supplementary cards. What did you do for the following line?

"If the Supplementary Card applicant is an existing American Express Card Member, please provide their Card number."

Also did you put in a different mobile number for each of your supplementary cards or just the same number?

        • @chey: I don't remember that question. I would have used the same phone number.

        • @tonka: Can you get $10 back twice if you use your main card and your supplementary card at the same retailer?

  • Yes thank goodness. This time it's one month. Didn't have time last weekend to spend all my available transactions and missed out on about 80% cash back. Hopefully this time I can make full use

If you just want a free Amex card to participate in this promotion, there are 3 you can consider. I recently posted on Amex Essential - details here. The other two are Qantas Discovery and Velocity.

  • Is there anywhere good to get mobile phone recharges in perth?

  • Can we donate online to the charities on Shop Small Donations with this deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/171354)?

    • +4

That was an awesome use of Shop Small. I donated $540 total and I'm looking forward to doing similar again this year.

      • Have you tried it yet? Can you let me know if it worked?

        • I generally wait until the end of Shop Small and use up any unused transactions on each card. I guess I'll be relying on others to try it first :)

    • I donated to the Heart Foundation this week and it's on that list. The transaction hasn't cleared yet. I'll post back here when it does and whether I get any cash back.

      • +2

It's cleared, I've since received the $10 cashback for purchases I made after the donation, and still no $10 cashback for that transaction. Oh well.

  • I'd love to get excited but I spent a lot of time on the last 2 and managed zero rebates.

  • I have sent GnarlyKnuckles' letter on the Shop Small Map Issues - writeup here to Amex using the secure login. Please consider doing this, perhaps if more of us do so, Amex will see it fit to devote resources to improving the map.

  • Do we need to register somewhere? I can't find link

    • +1

Registration will be opened 25th October.

This is great - thank you!
I assume you did the export from the existing/september map(?)
If so, would appreciate if you can do this export again when the updated Nov map is out :-)

      • +13

yes, from the below a few days ago.
        https://maps.americanexpress.com/aushopsmall#/

I can run it again, but don't think it will change too much.

Absolutely awesome work diks, I'm in awe of your skills and your generosity in taking the time to do this for us/share the results of your efforts with us. Odd that one dude can do what a huge multi-national company either could not do, or decided they did not want to do for whatever reason.

Is there some sort of 'OzB award' for 'most useful post of the year'?!?

          Cheers, amigo!!! So very helpful!!!

    • @thydzik, comment of the year! And I had great fun with your links by going to the top line, and punching in a post code, and/or category and hitting the 'enter' button!!

    • This is nothing short of spectacular, was it a difficult process to export from the map?

      • +5

It is a custom script, the hardest part is working out the syntax that returns a search query.

once that is worked out, it is simply a matter of automatically looping through lat/lng coordinates throughout Australia.

    • +2

Thank you so much :) Your effort is greatly appreciated!

    • Thanks for this. Can you give us a tutorial on how to do this, much appreciated?

      • +12

        here is the code
        http://thydzik.com/amex/amex.php.htm

        This is the important line
        $data_string = '{"handler_name":"coral","page_size":500,"page_no":"1","sort_order":"distance","input_request_id":"QC9zz9wA","input_context_id":"ShopSmall","request_data":{"channel":37,"country":"AU","ids":null,"campaign_id":"AMAU0001","location":{"lat":'.$postcode_arr[1].',"lon":'.$postcode_arr[2].'},"user_local_ts":"2016-10-14 14:54:11","mode":"instore","intl_radius":"2","unit":"miles"}}';

Which requests all the results for a specific latitude ($postcode_arr[1]) and longitude ($postcode_arr[2])

The rest is simply looping through a list of Australian postcodes with lat/lng coordinates, formatting and logging the results.

    • Thanks! I found sorting by post code then category a great way to view it!

      Great work mate
Just to piggy back on this; you can use a csv to kml converter like
      http://www.becsv.com/csv-kml.php
and import to Google Maps - limited to 2000 points so perhaps just filter to your particular location and see what's in your area

Problem is you can't filter/search within MyMaps which is a pain

Here's one for Melb CBD area

    • Good work

    • Thanks heaps @thydzik :) super helpful!

I've just noticed though that Ribs and Rumps (Macquarie Park) is on the small shop map, but not on the raw export nsw link. So if something isn't on the list, can always check the map just in case?

      • it's not this one?
Ribs And Rumps 11 Talavera Road North Ryde 2113

        • Oh!!! it sure is :) Sorry, I was trying to search under Macquarie Park. Didn't know it comes up under North Ryde.

    • Great work man, love it!

      Hey thydzik,

Just piggybacking off of your excellent work, hope you do not mind. I was a bit bored at work and proceeded to build a spreadsheet. If anyone is interested in using it, I've linked it below plus the macro you'll need to operate the actual spreadsheet.

Feedback is appreciated; haven't ever contributed to the Ozbargain community much but thought this would help some people.

Nothing fancy like a Google maps; simply a Google maps search and calculating travel times and distances.

I'm nominating thydzik for OzB member of the month awards. :)

      • You're a legend!

    • +5

Thanks, will be naming my first born Thydzik

    • Just would also like to add my thanks, I would have zero idea how to do this myself and it is extremely helpful and a massive time saver, so great work!

    • @thydzik I just went to a shop that's on your exported list, but they said they don't take AMEX, and when I checked AMEX's shop small map, it really isn't there.
Is this a bug or because AMEX is constantly changing their list?

The shop is Mbe Hurstville 9 Crofts Avenue Hurstville 2220 Office Supply Store Shopping -33.9661087 151.1026491

Love your work by the way. You're the hero we need but don't deserve.

      • There's a shop called Beautiful Pages in Darlinghurst that's on the Shop Small map but isn't in thydzik's list so could be a bug.

      • when I did another export on the 29th Oct, I noticed that there was about 20,000 less items.
I did slightly change the script to get rid of duplicates, but it seems that AMEX have reduced the number of stores.

        • Hi mate
          Fantastic effort.
So is the link in the body of the post the current locations?

    • Thanks, thydzik. Much appreciated.

    • You are a LEGEND - thank you!!!

  • Personal reminder so I won't forget hehe.

Anyone know of a good place for go card top ups in Brisbane city/west end/Milton area?

  • +1

Just registered for Shop Small! 125 000 cards.

Now to research who would be good for Opal top ups …

  • Also, I found a shop that is on the Shop Small map, but as far as I know, they haven't taken AMEX for almost a year now?

    • You must be new to this. The Shop Small map has been at times useless since the beginning. Some OzBargainers have tried to do something about it (see link), but it doesn't look to have gone anywhere.

      • I'm not new to this, thanks. I know all about the map, having done Shop Small last month. I was just stating what I discovered; perhaps they DO take AMEX again and I just don't know about it.

  • -4

    is there a manual link?

    • -2

Seriously, did you not look up about half a dozen posts where a manual link has already been provided?

    • -2

i did a quick scroll and couldn't see any. :(

  • +4

Could this be the manual link?
    https://offerenroll.americanexpress.com/enroll/EnrollmentSit…
I don't have the usual direct link on my AMEX connect yet

    • thanks @blueskyharvest :)

  • -5

Two questions please…..Does anybody know how to register a bank-issued AMEX card? Do the supp cards work if the main card is registered?

    • +3

      Did you read the wiki?

  • -5

So, does it also apply to bank issued Amex cards?

    • +1

      Did you read the wiki?

  • +1

I wonder if there is a faster way to manually register all my 12 cards than type each one in individually.

    • Use a smartphone and enter CC details using the camera.

      • Can't have camera and card input fields (website) both open on the mobile screen at the same time.

        • Don't use the camera app. It should be an option wihin the browser. At least it is on iOS.

    • But more importantly how on earth you have 12 cards !?

      • It's quite common around here especially as you can give yourself multiple supplementary cards and also give your partner multiple supplementary cards, all from one primary card. I have four primary cards.

    • Congrats, that's a new record, lol I freaked out when someone had 9.
How the heck do you get 12 valid, different AMEX cards?! Without setting off flags - surely a partners name too right?

      • We have four primary accounts, each account can have up to four supplementary cards. So it is possible to have 20 cards or more. It is even theoretically possible to have 20 cards all under your name, as your supplementary cards can also be under your name (but use a different variation, for example, including your middle initial, to avoid confusion). I think this only applies to Amex-issued cards, not bank-issued.

We keep most of our Amex cards in a card holder and only takes them when necessary.

        • I have the red one, the umm Velocity I think, I'm going to get one of the other ones, but I intend to stick with only AMEX supplied cards with 0$ yearly fees.

I kinda don't understand from AMEX perspective why they even offer supplementary cards, like what's the point? Why not just increase the users limit?

Still your situation is golden, what's that? Up to $1200 saves (before surcharge) assuming you can find goods you're after? I know Myki / Opal money is virtually cash, to an extent.

        • @hamwhisperer: definitely good for all the Amex offers. The more the merrier. Only thing is I often have to manually type in each.

I guess Amex want to encourage your friends parents and children to use Amex cards too! Having supplementary cards don't actually increase your credit limit.

        • @yycan: OMG you're kidding me - ok I didn't know that
So they need to be under another name then I take it?
I could make 4 supplentary cards, easily under my existing one then? I have no kids / wife / dog to put them under.

        • Was at 22 Market Street, he said someone came in with 20

        • @hamwhisperer: It doesn't have to be under the name of another person, but you probably want to have your name displayed slightly different so you know which card is which.

        • @Baghern: OMG That's beautiful - all for an Opal card? Does the card max out on credit limit? Bloody Myki maxes out at around $250 So you'd need multiple Mykis.

Not that we have anywhere NEAR enough little shops supporting it like Sydneysiders. Yet again Sydney > Melbourne :(

        • @hamwhisperer:

$250 here as well, just get multiple cards

  • +1

Frustrated with the number of retailers participating. Many small cafes/restaurants that were included in the previous years are now excluded for some reason.

    • Yeah, I found this to be the case in the Shop Small weekend just past. I don't know if a lot of them opted out to avoid unwanted Amex transactions (especially Myki etc), or Amex just randomly picked some off, but there was no rule as to what was excluded.

  • -1

Is this offer valid for amex branded supplementary cards?

    • -2

      Read the wiki.

    • yes, as long as the card numbers are different from the primary card

  • +2

Any fuel/petrol stations in brisbane part of this promo?

    • In past years, yes. But this time around I think they have deleted them! :(

Only one I can find is at Sunshine Coast: Little Mountain Car Cafe, 70-72 Caloundra Road, Little Mountain.

I wonder if the previous year's ones will still work? I can at least try.

  • Thanks
