I notice a lot of phones never get updates after a 1 year (sometimes less) are there brands that actually support their phones with timely updates for years?
Which Android Phones Get Timely Updates?

and blackberry?
Nexus and Pixel.
high end Xperia too
Nexus, practically all by itself.
Uhmmm, not sure about SONY.
They were the slow in updating to-fro Lollipop. However, they were the only OEM that actually corrected all the bugs from the AOSP in their builds before making the update available… other OEMs like Samsung, HTC, LG etc etc had to send out multiple updates to mitigate these issues well after SONY released their fix. SONY also published the fixes into the AOSP-tree in Github, which is why the other companies were able to benefit and apply the fixes as well. However, that was the days of the SONY Xperia Z3.
Due to the Snapdragon 810, and economic losses in SONY's mobile division, they killed it off.
Now they compete in the mid-range segment with the Xperia X-family (not the Z) in hopes to break even.
And I think one of the first casualties of these funding cuts will be their excellent software support (second to Nexus).
So we're essentially only left with Nexus devices for support (Google sold Motorola to Lenovo, so don't rely on Moto E/G/X's anymore).
Nexus!!!
Windows!…. oh wait
Other than the nexus and soon to be pixel phones, LG and HTC have to be the quickest. Samsung and the rest are down the list. I had an s5 and it got Marshmallow 2 years after purchase with not one single OTA in between.
Are you sure you got nothing apart from Marshmallow? I got Lollipop and a few security patches in between.
I used to have a windows 10 mobile.
Bought the nexux 6P.
Interface is very easy to understand. I have a Samsung Galaxy 7 Edge as well. SG7E is supposed to be one of the best mobiles currently but..
The nexus 6P is superior to the SG7E.
Updates are very frequent.
Having said that, the SG7E is a great mobile but the Nexus is awesome!!!!
What do you mean by timely?
Frequently updated for security and bugs during its lifetime, or
Supported for many years, or at least for as long as feasible?
Or both?
Both
No.
What phone do you use?
Uses this one.
I've owned my current phone (Galaxy note 3) for 3 years and got 3 updates (the second of which fixed problems after the first update). So Samsung is not the company you are looking for.
Samsung is great for custom firmwares which means a lot of new stuff to tinker.
Pixel and Nexus.
