just try. people post all the time how good the apple service is at store (I have never found it to be that way though)

Got a case from a mate but doesn't quite like the colour. Would be embarrassed to ask him for the receipt.
Find something better to do than swindle the largest/second largest company in the world.

Did you buy the case from Apple Store? If yes then you might be able to.
The problem is it's a gift from a mate and I don't know at all.
Just take it in and ask. Say you got it for a present but can you swap for a different colour… They can only say yes or no, no big drama.
