What RAM do I need...and where should I buy it from??

Hi guys.

My laptop is running a little slow and may well be in need of some more RAM. It's a Sony VAIO SVT1312B4E and according to the Crucial scanner, I should be considering Crucial 8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMMs.

Can anyone advise me on the maximum usable amount I can install, what alternatives are available and where should I consider buying it??

Many thanks in advance.

  • 2 slots. 1 used by what ever you have now. and the 2nd one you can put 8gb which will bring you to 10-12gb, more than enough for a laptop. get whatever sodimm DDr3 you can for cheap

depends on where you live in australia. you can visit "MSY" store they are australia wide, they have the worst costumer support but they have almost all the ram you need.. you can get a ddr3l 1600mhz as little $20 4gb (valueram, no heatsink) but mostly they are $50-70 for 8gb ddr3l rams
or you can buy online at pccasegear.com

  • Cheers guys for your advice. Lasolaso, I'm in Brisbane and there's an MSY store not too far away. I'll see if they have a similar module to what's currently fitted in slot 1.

If it's the slacks creek store, you will need to go into "soup Nazi mode"😀 , know exactly what you want, don't ask any questions, speak clearly and don't make eye contact.

  • Also, pccasegear.com look like they have the same/similar memory to what's currently fitted.

If your 32bit it wont see 10 gig anyway, also sometimes ram has compatability issues with each other so be prepared to not be able to put both in.

I did yhis exact upgrade on my old Asus afew years ago, then a month later put a ssd in, the ssd made much more improvment in my case.

i would get an SSD and replace the HDD over getting more ram - or actually find out why it's running slow…..

  • It's 64-bit and already has an SSD fitted. I've deleted programs/files, run virus/malware scanner and System Mechanic and it's still a little chugging at times. I think I'll just try adding 8Gb of compatible RAM (even if it's from Crucial) as it's so cheap.

    Thanks again.

make sure you know the exact ram before you go on msy, their customer service/support are really beyond bad. and please please check at msy website it the item is available in store in your area which is brisbane or else they will name calling you and be so angry at you for not knowing its out of stock. since msy have no competition in tech store because they only profit little compare to the local shop with great customer service but terrible item price, the guys whos at the msy counter couldnt careless what you have and if its not compatible with your device, and warning to you that msy dont do refund if you change mind or bought the wrong thing.
make sure you have a great cup of coffee and maybe a toast in the morning, cause once you get in the store your gonna have a terrible time and just ruin your whole day. best of luck!

      • gasman70 - from what i can see, it has a 32gb SSD and I assume that houses the OS, maybe it's even a hybrid drive?

the progs will live on the HDD (drive or section of hybrid - depending)

I'm talking about ditching the HDD entirely

either your SSD is utterly full and this will cause slowing down as the OS hunts with the small amount left, or it's using the HDD for a swapfile (what are your swapfile settings?), what are your recycle bin settings? do you have system restore on? do you have indexing on? what services are running? what progs are running in the background? what are you loading on startup?

i HIGHLY doubt your issues are ram related

EDIT - you have a hybrid SSHD - not a great combination IMO. Ditch this and get a 500gb SSD.

      • I suppose that could be MSY on a busy day. Some of the stores seem to be that way permanently. My local MSY at Dandenong South is usually quite helpful if they have the time. Don't go there first up on a Saturday and looking for a chat.
