Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge advice

Dear OZbargainers,

I am currently planning to buy the Mrs a new phone. She's had her Samsung galaxy S4 for almost 3 years now and it's time to upgrade.

She only likes Samsung phones and won't even consider another brand. I have already explored that option as I personally believe that there's better options out there.

I am aware of the recent Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge deals, most of which have been for grey imports. We both are happy with prepaid and enjoy the freedom of being able to jump ships at any time and join a different provider. Therefore I'm only interested in an outright device.

I was thinking of buying the phone outright from one of the major local retailers to enjoy the 2 year Australian warranty. I have a Coles platinum mastercard with the merchandise protection option. Although I will definitely pay more than what I will for grey imports, I hope this may be compensated for via the merchandise protection in the next few months.

What are people's thoughts about this?

  • buy from a local retailer and hope for a price drop soon? If buying from a local retailer, which one is likely to be an advantage for using the CC merchandise protection?
  • just stick to grey imports and save a few hundred dollars for now?
  • unfortunately the bikies option is not relevant in this case

  • initially i was looking at buying from ebay (QD or T-Dimension) grey import but then due to my bad experience with grey imports, when its broken, im without a phone. so for my S7E, this time, i bought outright during the % sale from officeworks, worked out i'm paying $200+ than grey import and enjoy the local warranty.

I'd suggest a grey import if you missed out on Woolies' awesome 8GB deal.

I still regret not getting that since every subsequent Woolies plan for the s7e were inferior.

On the upside, grey imports also lets you have a second sim. Sales get it to as cheap as $670. I got mine for $700 from an earlier eBay sale and don't regret it.

A lot of people have had issues (especially regarding bootlooping G4s) and although I didn't buy the G4, I've had other grey import devices replaced with free postage both ways but YMMV.

    • I personally got stung with the Asus Zenfone 2. I bought it from Qd_AU and to be honest they were quite good with the warranty handling. That being said, I had to send it for repairs and ended up for around 5 weeks using an old phone which was quite inconvenient.

As for the Woolworths 8 GB deal, I was aware of it, but we need the full Telstra network coverage as we live in the NT and we need the full Telstra network. We are both using Boost mobile and enjoy the free unlimited calls to the US and Canada, which is not the case with most plans.

I understand the wanting to stay on prepaid and being able to jump ship from supplier to supplier.
I think the main reason to do this is to chase better deals.

I recently got the S7 (not edge) from optus and it came out to be $56.50 per month.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262524

    As an example
Similar current offers amaysim 7 gb for 28 days 39.90 = 1037.4 (26 billing periods in one month)
    Vs 56.50 * 24 months $1356

That makes my phone only $318.6 difference to what i'd otherwise be paying on prepaid.
Also get local stock and warranty.

Numerous different plans can be applied and as long as you come out on top of having to buy a grey import you're in the money.
As your wife has her previous phone for three years you know most likely she will be okay with this one for 24 months.

You also don't need to shell out the cash upfront either.

Unfortunately for us, network coverage is an issue as we live in the NT.

I have been with Amaysim in the past but was affected by the lack of coverage especially in remote areas.

I do agree with you however about the Mrs not minding staying with a new phone for 24 months and thus taking advantage of a plan. But to be honest, we have switched providers quite a few times and most recently we have been enjoying free unlimited calls on Boost prepaid to family in the US and Canada.

I understand if it comes down to coverage.
Luckily for me i haven't experienced lack of coverage with any provider where i am.
As for unlimited calls she can borrow your phone =P

        • If only telcos were more transparent about their "fair usage policy"

Since that is not the case, I always imagine my number getting disconnected if we end up making our calls from one number

    • Although I don't disagree with your reasoning, but I however don't find your example relevant in this case.

You are missing the main point of people who are on prepaid. They simply don't pay $39.90 (your example of amaysim) for every billing period. There is always some sort of 50% off or other deal going on in the market. The most they pay is $20 a month (worst case) which brings the total to $520 (over 26 billing periods).

If you factor these in, then being on a plan would cost you $1356 - $520 = $836, which is a massive difference.

      • yet an aus stock samsung galaxy s7 still costs more than $836. so still relevant for your example.

As OP mentioned i believe he needs to be on Telstra because he lives in the NT.
        So not suitable for him.

If you're okay with getting seconds I would definitely recommend pocketronics. Damaged boxes but the phone is fine and you save a few hundred dollars! They do seconds and you can currently get the Aussie S7 there for about $750-780 with the C10AUS code. They did have the edge when I got my S7 a few days ago but looks like they just have the normal S7 now.

I got my Australian S7 for $725 and will get TRS when I go through the airport so comes to $650 - $10 more than grey with 2yrs Australian warranty! Phone is in perfect condition.

Look at this on eBay - gold S7 vanilla

$747 for Australian stock is pretty good! Hope this helps? If you're really keen on the edge maybe you could keep checking the listings.

Edit : $732 with this eBay voucher… Man I'm annoyed I didn't get my phone just a little cheaper!

I dragged her all over Brisbane when Dick Smith went bust and I don't think she's forgiven me haha

    • Hoping you can answer this, if I buy a phone on ebay and it says it's from overseas - does it mean I can't claim trs? Even though it's from dick Smith? http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/191940902336?_mwBanner=1

More TRS as it's an imported product under a $1000, sorry mate!
