What makes it a VR camera??

Just looks like a standard 360 degree camera… nothing related to virtual reality involved??

    • VR Mode for viewing on VR Headsets

      • But that's still not Virtual Reality. Thats viewing Reality on a Virtual Reality Headset?

        • +1

the videos and photos shot by the camera is best viewed via VR to get life size representation…. so i guess 360 degrees camera are designed for making VR content but you are right, it by itself is not VR

        • -5

I stand corrected. It's a pretty good price for a "viewing reality on a virtual reality headset" camera. Too lazy to update the product description.

    • -2

The product name and feature set?

      • -1

Calling a Sedan a Ute, doesn't make it a Ute.

And there doesn't appear to be any actual feature set that has to do with Virtual Reality.

        • -2

Drop the "virtual" if it makes you happy.

        • @cobberboy:

Make me happy?? Do you not understand the point? It's not a Virtual Reality Camera, no matter which way you look at it. It doesn't take pictures of virtual reality, and it doesn't generate virtual reality images.

Can I play the video from this thing on a 3d TV? Yes. Does that make it a 3d Camera too? No.

        • +5

          @geoffellis:
Saying "nothing related to virtual reality involved" seems a bit off to me. Sure, they shouldn't label it as just a "VR Camera", but one of the main uses of this camera would have to be putting the video through your VR headset?

        • +1

@geoffellis: No sorry I'm afraid I (genuinely) don't get your point. It is a 3d camera AFAICT. It has two lenses and a "VR mode for viewing on VR headsets". It's called a Virtual Reality camera.

If there's some technical reason you're aware of that this isn't VR, aside from it not being 'virtual', explaining that reason to the rest of us might help us get your point. Analogies about sedans and utes haven't been helpful, and all you said prior to your last comment (in 3 separate comments) was to the effect of "it's not VR".

How can something "take pictures of virtual reality" ? Is that what you think a VR camera is?

        • +1

@geoffellis: you could play the video on your TV but it would be very distorted. 360 video for VR is mean for head tracking so you have to look around. so it is a virtual reality camera because it makes video for your virtual reality headset. eg samsung gearVR.

  • +1

this is pretty low res for 360 camera…. i've been following 360 cam development for a while and been holding off…. this is definitely cheap (relatively) but the samsung gear 360 will offer much better quality output…. here's a good vid about 360 cameras (not gear 360 specific) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpd2u0eC750

    • +4

Sure you get better quality if you're willing to spend $499 for the samsung 360. Literally twice the price.

      • i am not saying that this is n't a good price for a 360 camera… but even at 4k res for the Gear 360, it's really too low resolution for 360 VR content so I suppose i'm saying if you are really keen to get 360 content, better not to spend the money at all then get such a low res cam….. but each to their own i guess….

  • +4

In virtual reality 2k is watchable, but 4k is what you need.

Anything less and you are wasting your money.

    • After watching the Excellent YouTube vid (3 things your NEED to know about Gear 360),
I'd say we need to know what resolution we get around the 360degree spin, not in a photo or vid, taken with fixed angle cam.

Oh, DOES ALDI CAMERA FIT STANDARD TRIPOD MOUNTING SCREW.
(The table of 5 360 cam's showed one (in 2 models) that required an Adapter(read: extra cost)

Look like my last comment may have broke a rule, sorry.

Just wanted to the point out this camera seem to be a rebadged Elephone Elecam 360 WiFi. Review of that here
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Beu5o3G5e7s

Do a search it can be found for less than Aldi's but equally Aldi is local and come with 60 no questions asked return.

    • Using that information I found this:
      http://www.everbuying.net/product1177786.html?currency=AUD
      Which includes a 32GB microSD card for $164.29 delivered…

      • I found it even cheaper on gearbest but without the card.

        • Why don't you post it and give people the option?

        • @bluechan: I did earlier but is got removed "Referral or affiliate links in comments are not allowed"

  • It's Aldi, so can try for 60 days right?

  • i want a camera that does 180 degrees in 3d but it looks like the dual lenses are on the top and bottom. so 360 cameras probably aren't good for vr hmds?

    but i found this one

LG 360 Cam is better value for money at $209

This is a photo I took with it

    • Not bad at all. Seems better to me, but I'm no 360 photo expert.

    • Time to paint your house.

      • Not my house

I personally am waiting for JV option on this one

  • I grabbed the VR headset to try out with Cardboard apps. For a n00b like me, it's pretty nifty.

However, I find the picture somewhat blurry, especially noticeable with text. I can't adjust focus enough with the lens adjustment sliders. My kids say it's a bit blurry for them too, but from the sound of it, not as blurry as I find it (or maybe they're easier to please!)

Is this a common thing - older people can't see VR sharply due to their eyesight? I don't wear glasses (though probably should). Or are such headsets known for a wide tolerance of quality?

EDIT: Nvm, I just worked out that the lens sliders can move further back than I initially thought. Much better. Now how to avoid feeling sick after extended sessions???

  • Did anyone get the 360 camera? Any feedback?

  • I was Aldi tonight and I swear this has been greatly discounted to $129, down from $249. That is a big decrease for Aldi? Are these no good at all? I was thinking about getting one for my son to use on his mountain bike or would this be wasted for a mountain bike/better options and more dedicated for bikes ?

    • Anyone recommend it?
