Parents - What Skincare Products Do Your Teenage Girls Use?

Hi,

My daughter is 13 and her skin goes through bouts of being dry. I have bought her supermarket products like Simple or Johnson and Johnson and I'm not sure either any good for her skin. She's a healthy girl and very rarely does she get spots. I introduced her to skincare products about a year to 18 months ago. Is that too late?

If you have daughters what products do they use and where can I buy them?

THANK YOU.

Avene Hydrance Cream (Rich or Light) or Avene Skin Recovery help when the skin is dry. Both genuinely improve the texture when the skin is flaky and aren't just full of silicones that give the illusion that the feel of the skin has improved.

It also might help to feed the skin from within, consider fish oil supplements or simply changing the diet to include more healthy oils. Drink more water.

My daughter is 13 with beautiful skin.
She uses goats milk soap in the shower and Ulay complete with 15 SPF.

    • Just wondering is Ulay supposed to be Olay? It is big range. Do you mind to post an image so I know which item to buy for her?

It used to be called Olay. They changed it to Ulay.

I used Neutrogena when I was a teenager. Extra Gentle Cleanser and Oil-Free Moisture.

    Now I use ModelCo

Is she just dry or dry and oily? Some creamy/oily/thick "natural botanicals" moisturisers have a higher chance of breaking people out.
If she's flaky, buy a home microdermabrasion exfoliater once a week (Eg. The Body Shop Vitamin C microdermabrasion, more effective than the usual scrubs.

I had the same problem when I was a teenager.
After a few unsuccessful attempts, parents took me to see a doctor to which some medication was subscribed.
And instruction not to use toner.

    SPF SPF SPF
    Even in winter.
I wish I started when I was that young! Get your vitamin D on other areas of skin, but always sunscreen up the face.

  • it rubs the lotion on its skin.

I'm 23 and still struggle with my skin occasionally, but it's never too late to start taking care of your skin. I started reading and really started understanding what I was putting on my face and my skin has never looked better.

    A few tips:

She's still young and every teenager gets bad skin, so she doesn't need a ton of products. Start her off with a gentle cleanser and a good moisturizer. I use Neutrogena Extra Gentle Cleanser (Priceline, or almost anywhere) and CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion (an American brand you can get from iHerb now, but it's a giant tub and lasts for aaages.)

Avoid harsh scrubs and extra drying products, especially things like the St Ives Apricot Scrub. They do more harm than good in the long run. Also, squeaky clean isn't a good thing, it will just dry her skin out more.

Does she wear makeup? She should consider a second cleanser like an oil cleanser to really take the makeup off (make sure she's taking her makeup off at the end of the night!) I use the Face Of Australia oil cleanser as it emulsifies well, then I follow up with my Neutrogena cleanser.

Hydrate and wear sunscreen! Water and sun protection will do more than any product. Try and get her to wear sunscreen more- preferably every day, but she's thirteen, so at least if she's going to be outside for extended periods.

Don't introduce a ton of new products all at once, get her to try maybe 1 new product a week to make sure the new product doesnt break her out. If her breakouts are really bad, take her to a dermatologist.

EDIT: Sorry, another thought about sunscreen. It's my understanding that you'd need a LOT of any product that advertises itself as a sunscreen-moisturizer hybrid to actually get the SPF on the label, so try and get seperate products. I've been buying japanese sunscreens which are a lot more cosmetically elegant than what you can buy in shops here, if that's a concern.

  • nothing! my 19yo made it all the way through without acne issues or anything. Same as me…maybe it's genetics
