    I did this flight last week and it was an A330, which was underwhelming. My thoughts were that if a cheaper flight can be had on Jetstar, one might as well take that option instead.

  I just came back from Hawaii. Cheap fares are all well and good. But remember that Hawaii itself is not a cheap destination. Consider some unserviced holiday apartments in lieu of a hotel. Otherwise expect to be around $350 aud a night with taxes. Also school yourself up on the insurances you need during Car hires, to prevent getting insurances you don't need. We did one week all up with time on the big island and wakiki in moderate quality hotels. And we only paid $900 with jetstar for two return for our flights. And we didn't splash out and took the bus mostly. Total cost of trip was $6000 for two. Comparatively We did 23 days on the USA west coast for $7000 a few years ago.

    And I did 3 islands in 3 weeks for Au$1000 - people always talk about the expense but budget travel is still an option.

      We did much the same, staying in hostels. I cannot recommend Banana Bungalow on Maui enough - nice, clean place, free all-day bus tours of the island 7 days a week (just tip the guides) and a great atmosphere (especially if you're up for a party at night).

        I mostly hired a car with a friend, took a tent and camped. As Pulseidon, I also spent a week or so in hostels.

  I know Hawaii tends to have nice weather throughout the year, but I really hate winter. :(

    Jetstar regularly do sub $500 return flights to Hawaii in the summer. I flew there on Jetstar a few months back and cannot complain. Brand new plane, half-decent leg room. We skipped the food and entertainment on the flight (costs extra) but a few sandwiches and a laptop/iPad are easily packed.

  Just double check you ARE actually going and returning on a Qantas plane, if you really want to be coming and going in a Qantas plane! The bestie is still fuming over paying Qantas prices, for what turned out to be Jetstar flights, to and from Hawaii. I tried explaining code sharing to her……

  Hawaiian Airlines were $902 return from Sydney the other day. That gives 2 x 32kg bags. If you book inter-island flights at the same time you get the same baggage allowance.
