I know that you have to sign up to a 24month contract but is the offer or 12000 or 8000 velocity points worth it?

20000 points is worth around $100
If you pay them $2400 over 24 months on your plan and you get a $1000 phone and Velocity credit worth $40-50, whether it's worth it is really up to you.
Virgin mobile is normally a bit cheaper than Optus and Telstra but more expensive than some of the sim only deals

In general 12,000 points (you can get either 12,000 or 8,000 depending on what plan you choose) does not worth much, it is a good icing on the cake, if you were already planning to sign up for a 24 month contract with Virgin. And as for the points, there are many other ways to get velocity points, say from credit cards, NAB home loan, switching gas and electricity to Lumo Energy, etc.
