New Phone feeling is definitely not worth it for me, Analysis of New Telstra iPhone 7 Plan for me

Need to use telstra for receptions issue
Wanted to save anyone in my situation some work and before I pull the trigger could someone give me better advice
Currently 12 months in on an Iphone 6S 16G (big mistake) $70 Telstra go (2.5GB Data) with $22 device payment per month with New phone feeling (no additional cost)

2.5G not enough and usually adding 1 or 2 $10 1G packs per month
Looking to Get Telstra Iphone plan for $113 (offered $111), for 128G Iphone 7 with 10GB (8+2) data (you've got to plan ahead with these things and think about what you may need in 2 years time which I didn't do when I only got 16G and 2.5G data)

New phone feeling I have to payout device of $550 and pay $149 and my iphone is definitely worth more than $400 so definitely not going there (Its only 1 year old and good condition as well). They will waive the other $430 as they usually do as long as you stay with them on another contract

10GB plan BYO is $70 for Telstra (I know other carriers are cheaper but need $430 waived and also I know plans should get cheaper over the next 12 months as well) so am paying $41 x 24 = $984 for the phone over 24 months ($1229 at Apple shop)

Any more ideas and could I get them any lower than $111 per month?

  • I thought the point of the whole new phone feeling (ripoff) was so that you can pay $149 during the last twelve months of your contract (which, in the case of your 24 month contract, is now) without having to pay the remaining device payments?

It seems to say so on their website as well:

What is Telstra New Phone Feeling?
Telstra New Phone Feeling lets you purchase a new device during the final 12 months of your existing plan –
without having to pay the remaining payments on your existing device –when you take up a new eligible 24 month Device Payment Contract.

All you need to do is take up a new handset on a new 24-month eligible plan, agree to pay a one-off fee of $149 at the time you redeem (there is no fee for Premium Mobile Plan customers), and return your existing/original smartphone undamaged and in good working order within 14 days of recontracting. You’ll also need to provide proof of identity and any other documentation we require. This offer cannot be added to an existing plan and isn’t available for Pre-Paid customers.

So where does the $550 payout for the device come from? (Unless you told them you wanted to keep the iphone 6S as well, then you've got to pay it out)

Otherwise, what's the point of paying extra each month if you eventually need to pay for the whole phone and then pay another $149 for the "privilege" of buying two phones?

    • I think the caveat you missed is that it requires a

new eligible 24 month Device Payment Contract

which the 10Gb BYO presumably doesn't meet since it's a BYO, not a device plan.

If OP can find a device plan that suits his/her needs, then the New Phone Feeling might apply.

      • Looking to Get Telstra Iphone plan for $113 (offered $111), for 128G Iphone 7 with 10GB (8+2) data

OP is looking at the Telstra iPhone 7 plan for $113 that has 10GB data.

That deal includes both phone & plan, and IS an eligible plan.

  • 550 is price to keep my iPhone and start a new plan 12 months in On my 24 month contract while getting a new phone as well

    • If you think the phone is only valued at $400, why not give the iphone 6 back instead of paying the $550?
(It's no different to buying the phone outright at the start and having it depreciate to what it's worth today, other than the fact that you've paid the NPF monthly fee and the $149 that needs to be paid for the NPF "benefit" to kick in with a new contract).

Hi I was previously a Telstra customer but their plans with the iPhone were too expensive and not good value. Just wanted to let you know that Aldi and Woolworth mobile (which I use) both support the Telstra 4G network. I am using this with my iPhone 6S and my child's iPhone 6. For me it worked out best to buy the phone outright and use a Aldi/Woolworths sim only prepaid/post plans. Apple also offer 12 months interested free if you can't afford to buy the iPhone outright. Good luck !!

    • Don't mind me, I'm just having that Sad Phone Feeling when a child's phone is better than mine. LOL

    • These resellers only have access to part of the Telstra network. The parts that generally overlap with Optus/Vodafone coverage.

The difference in coverage between Telstra Wholesale and full Telstra is in the vicinity of 100% by land area. (ie Full Telstra covers roughly twice as much land area!)

      • Interesting, do you have articles/resources to back this up?

I was told Telstra did away with wholesale/retail and opened up their network…

        • Go have a look at ALDI or Woolies coverage maps to compare Telstra Wholesale to Optus coverage.
Have a look at their population claim, TW resellers claim 98% population coverage, just like Optus.
Telstra claim 99% population coverage. It's only ~1% difference in population, but that's a lot of land area.

          http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/vic/VSC/2014/35.html

“… the figures of 99.3 per cent in relation to Telstra and 98.5 per cent in relation to Optus bear no resemblance to the actual Geographic Coverage of the respective networks. Moreover, the difference in Geographic Coverage between the 2 networks is far greater than 1 per cent. As may be seen in paragraph 37 above, Telstra’s mobile network covers an area nearly 2½ times greater in land mass than the mobile network of Optus.”

So I was wrong.. My apologies, Telstra full network (as at 2014) was significantly more than 2 times larger than Optus!
Since they still claim similar population coverage numbers, I think it's a safe to say the land mass coverage ratio is still similar.
