I am still in the process of hunting down a notebook — and have to do it before EoFY! Found this Dell Vostro that I am now considering. Pretty good for a light weight (less than 2kg) i5 business notebook. $899 (with $300 off until 10 June). E-Value code: T520343AU

  • Intel Core i5-520M (2.4GHz/2.93GHz, 2 core 4 thread)
  • 4GB DDR3-1066MHz
  • 320GB HDD
  • 13.3" LED display
  • Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator HD
  • 8X DVD+/-RW Drive
  • Windows Vista® Home Basic SP2 32 bit Edition

Biggest problem I see is Windows Vista Home Basic (urgh, are they still allowed to sell that thing?!) which you might need to either pay $104 to upgrade to Windows 7 Pro, or install something like Ubuntu.

Edit: Use coupon code PZP?H153TN8BS2 to get 8% off. Final price = $$827.07.

  • Looks like a good deal.

Personally I would be adding the 310M graphics card in there and it would make a ok casual gameing PC. I've also read that the run time on batteries for the 3300 isn't fantastic. Also worth looking at the 3400 (which is the 14" version of this).

dont forget you can use the 8% coupon on top of this to make it $827.07: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/25324

  • Looks pretty good to me. I am also hunting for a notebook now and as always, not sure which one to get :(
    Any suggestion?

    • +1

I'd go with the Vostro 3500 since it's basically the same but with a bigger screen, 6 cell battery and HDMI.

      http://www1.ap.dell.com/au/en/business/vostronb/vostro-3500/…

It's a bit chunkier with a 15.6 inch screen but the battery life is actually a fair bit better. Slightly cheaper too ($735.08 with the 8% off code). There's no dedicated graphics though

  • +1

Anyone know if you're able to buy a 6 or 8 cell battery separately?

    • yeah 4 cell just doesn't cut it for a portable machine

  • Vista home basic?? :(
additional $104.5 going to Win7pro and no 64bit option.

Get an iPad (hehehe) and get a new life….

    • Apple troll alert!! :)

Does that Apple iPad thingy run Microsoft Office? :)

      • +1

Haha Mod on Mod. Let the fanboism fight begin. :D

        • Its a tongue in cheek payback for hijacking my ipad thread in the forums ;-)

      • M$ Office ? Ill pass. Open Office is the way of the future :P

        • +4

And of course the iPad runs neither :-)

  • Its basically 890$ with the 310 Graphics card. Do you think this laptop is an amazing deal?

    • +1

Not sure a neg is fair, but I too was bawling my eyes out on seeing the crappy old 15-pin VGA connector, since it seemed like a pretty sweet deel after adding the 310M and using the 8% coupon as massari suggested.

      • Even if this unit had the HDMI out, not sure that the integrated graphics card will make it easy on 1080p or basically anything in HD.

        • you can spec it with a dedicated GPU.

    • +1

      BTW I believe the 3400, 3500 and 3700 (14"-17") all have HDMI it's only the 3300 (13") that doesn't.

Deffinetly don't think it warranted a neg though.

This is a pic of the 3400 with hdmi

    • Lots of different laptops out there with lots of different specs. Just because this one doesn't have what you're after, you cannot generalise that to the general populations need. In other words, no HDMI =/= neg vote.

      • -2

I maintain that any computer that doesn't have digital video output if a neg.

        • Don't be so selfish. By voting negative you are potentially this page from the site, preventing others from finding a potentially good deal.

          • -2

@tomsco: So, I get a neg for clarifying why I voted a previous neg? Smart.
I am not preventing anyone from buying it, nor am I taking the deal away ("selfish"?) - if someone wants to buy a computer without digital video output, it's most certainly a decision they will regret, but I am not stopping anyone - I just think it's a compromise no-one should be making at this price.

            • @AlexF: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines#nega…

"if a deal gets a number of negative votes, it is removed from most visitors screens"
So yes, if there were more people that thought like you, and acted in the same way than it would result in the deal disappearing.

And how do you know what people will regret. I have a laptop to use it as a laptop. I have no need for digital video output.

"Negative Votes are reserved for listing violations such as duplicate, SPAM, and sockpuppeting."

"Negative votes are also appropriate when there maybe something wrong with the product."

"Reliability issues are also important to know about."

"A negative vote would also be appropriate for cheaper prices elsewhere."

Now does your reason for voting negative mean any of these guidelines. No, and that is why your vote was removed. Take a moment to read the guidelines at some point.

              • -1

@tomsco: Err.., did you read - "I just think it’s a compromise no-one should be making at this price" or too busy copy/pasting?

                • @AlexF: Yes I did read that (just like I read the voting guidelines). Just because you don't think something is a deal because of your preconceived needs doesn't mean you should be voting negative.

And did you not read "I have a laptop to use it as a laptop. I have no need for digital video output."

I'm sure a decent chunk of laptop buyers will purchase one to have it on the go, and won't consider connecting it to a monitor.

Once again, just because you don't think it's a bargain, doesn't mean it is not. Stop pushing your agenda onto others.

                    :))

    • Alexf no details - no valid vote. revoked

  • I don't think any Windows Vista based computer is a good thing to invest on, let alone the Home Basic version.

  • Can anyone comment on this one form MLN:
    https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=853

    • +1

The one from MLN - Slower CPU, bigger size (15.6 inch), No wireless N, No bluetooth. It is cheaper and does have an HDMI (and better OS included).

Dell one comes with a 7200rpm drive. The Dell one basically runs faster… the only main problem is lack of HDMI. I don't understand why Dell would not include HDMI in their laptops across the board.

Both laptops are reasonably cheap (for now)… but they both have their minor issues.

      • Thanks mate for the detailed comment. Cheers.

  • I know someone with this model, and it's okay except for the one big negative of battery life, with only two hours. If battery life is important make sure you pay for the 8 cell. It also only has 2x USB ports, but their model did have eSATA.

I actually looked for a generic battery for them but didn't find any on eBay. Anyone know where to get one for a reasonable price?

  • Can anyone get through to that link? The E-value code doesn't seem to work.

    • Wait just navigated to it. Just realised that its cheaper to use the $899 version and upgrade the OS and video card than the to get the $1199 which already has it!
