LIFX White 800 Deal - 2 Bulbs for US$44.99 (~$60 AUD) Delivered

740
RMN10

I just bought 2 white 800 lumen one, with the code, total is $44.99, which is not too bad compared to Aus pricing / versus Wemo.

I have colour one for my study/entertainment room, but getting these 2 for bedroom on white only. At least these are still fully adjustable from cool to very warm white (almost yellow). So good enough for me.

Don't forget to put the code for extra 10% off at checkout.

Note - you don't have to buy 2, discount still applies for more/less order.

for not much more you can still get the colour ones

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262424

    • For some reason that one doesn't work anymore.

      • +3

Add to shopping cart, hit checkout, and the same screen it asks for paypal / credit card there is a place to put the code in on the top right.

Just tired it and it applied the discount, though didnt go through with it as ordered too many of these already

        • Lol that's exactly what I did. I think the site was trying to tell me to save $20 and get the white only as I really only need white hues lol

    • Compare them: https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/200064629-LIFX-Pr…

LIFX Original: 17w for 1017 lumens
      White 800: 11w fr 890 lumens

      • +2

You save all of $1.50 a year. But get less brightness.

The biggest advantage of the new bulbs is less heat. So you can use them in more lamps. Also smaller size. But no cool colors.

    • +1

The White deal reminded me about the runout and managed to purchase two for half price.

  • Looks cool. But how do these work? Do they have wifi inbuilt or something?

    • +3

yep wifi inbuilt, take ~5 mins to setup then can control colour(these ones are white colours only), brightness/dimness with app on phone

      • +1

Do any of them have an ethernet port…not bodgy 10/100 either, I wantz them sweet gigabitz! ;)

        • +4

The idea of running an ethernet jack to each light, along with how big the light would be to fit said extra jack makes me shudder ;)

        • @superroach: PoE lights could be cool, 48V 15W would make for up to 60W~ at 12V, plenty to run one of these.

        • +2

@superroach: I remember the bad old days of coax with T-pieces & terminators…imagine needing them for your lighting network! ;)

        • @XeKToReX: But you've replaced a wire with…. a wire. A more expensive and niche cable, that an electrician will typically look at and go "huhwtf"

The only possible advantage would be paranoia about security.

        • +1

@StewBalls: at that point you may as well own it, and use them as christmas lights hanging off via T-Pieces and BNC.

        • +1

          @superroach: Wouldn't it be courageous! :)

        • +1

@superroach: Having a dozen bulbs on your WiFi network is slowing the rest of your WLAN down, was more of a workaround for that.

Easy upgrades by just unplugging the current etherglobe and plugging a new one in :D

        • +1

@XeKToReX: or just set up a separate network- if you're super concerned? Nowadays you could just push your lights to 2.4GHz and devices to 5GHz (most devices work on 5, certainly in the near future). Thus not affecting other devices. Assuming most people have 2.4/5Ghz simultenous.

        • @StewBalls:

Been there, done that. "Your network has been TERMINATED."

    • 11w for 890 lumens, 114mm long

  • +4

For those who haven't experienced the white options of LIFX before, try checking out the video review to know how much white hue difference this can offer - this is not like your standard lights from bunnings ie - cool white or warm white only. It offers much more hue options even in white.

    • +2

yep amazing how many whites there are, worth the investment, well not only the colour choice but the dimming functions too.

    • +1

I've got the colored ones and love changing the color temp on whites. Bedroom is nice and warm, study is cooler along with some other rooms. Then I have one in the bedroom BIR and bathroom so I turn on cool colors in each and get a sweet atmosphere.

      Girlfriend hates it though.

  • +1

Speaking of getting the colour one as well, if you look at this video review below, apparently the white in the White 800 version is whiter than the white in the Colour one.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AUYvGsmXgk

    • +1

I never use the high color temps. They're just too artificial feeling. Natural is a good sweet spot.

    • Anyone that owns Colour and White can confirm this? Only need white but need it bright.

  • +2

Cheers op! Bought one for the bathroom :) can't take those 3am bathroom breaks where I blind myself every time.

    • +4

That's a good point. Perhaps you can set the timing such as:
      - 6PM to 10.30PM: 75%
      - 10.30 PM to 6AM: 5%

  • +3

Lifx + tasker = fun lighting automation! The android Lifx app will absolutely drive you mad though.

    • I'm so keen to play around with this!

  • Australia uses E27 or E26?

    • +4

      E26 Edison Screw - Low voltage: 100-120V
      E27 Edison Screw - High voltage: 200-240V
      B22 Bayonet Cap - High voltage: 200-240V

    • B22 (Bayonet) for Australia.

Some IKEA lamps and such will occasionally have E27 (screw).

    • +1

Its E27 (screw) or B22 (bayonet/pin). I had to google this because I wanted a light fitting to install to a little table lamp and thought it'd be cool to use one of these Lifx's

  • +4

The new colour 1000 cost $79.98 US for 2 bulbs if you use 500PX code.

    • Can also get one of each (white 800 and colour 1000) for $74.98 USD with the 500PX code.

Not bad for first timers who would like to try one of each.

    • Nice one. Hope they get them out quick since Auspost likes to take so long… might arrive before the weekend.

      • +1

They shipped mine via DHL from hong kong, was real quick.

But they also have a local Australian warehouse too, which uses auspost.

        • Ah yeah that would be good. Just assumed would come from the Aus fulfilment centre like the originals did the other week.

        • Ordered delayed, temporarily out of stock of E27 Color 1000, and told will be shipped from HK via HK Post so probably up to 2 weeks shipping time..
          Bummer :(

I got one from the last deal and found it to be more trouble than it's worth.

If I change any network setting affecting wifi or reboot the router, the bulb goes offline. If I log in using the Windows 10 app, the bulb goes offline. Each time the bulb goes offline it takes 3-5 hardware resets before the bulb will broadcast its setup SSID again.

Googling for solutions I found that users with issues usually cannot find specific solutions to problems. It's a matter of "keep resetting and reconnecting it until it randomly works and then pray it stays working".

Customer support was very responsive but offered nothing beyond generic trouble shooting - update your phone, update your router, try a different light socket, we are aware our Windows 10 app is very buggy.

In the end no real solution was available and I'm just using it as a regular light bulb. It's very bright but IMO a bright light bulb isn't worth anywhere near $40.

    • +4

How often are you making WiFi/router changes that this is any more than a minor annoyance?

      • It's installed in the ceiling. Each time I change a setting or reboot I'd have to get the ladder out and climb up and down multiple times resetting it due to its inconsistent behavior.

Now imagine doing that for multiple bulbs across multiple locations.

If that's something you'd like to pay a premium for, then good for you.

        • Still doesn't explain why you're making Router changes so frequently!
I set my router up in 2014 when I bought it and apart from blackouts, I haven't power cycled it or otherwise touched it physically or electronically…
Agreed it sounds alike a possible flaw in the bulbs, but there's a high chance there's a flaw in the user as well!

        • Not that I've looked incredibly hard, but I can't find any other complaints as you describe..
Which makes it sound even more like a setup issue at your end.

eg Does your WiFi SSID or password contain any special characters that might be upsetting things (: / \ or . are the obvious contenders here cause they're all common indicators of a "break" in programming languages)?
I only ask this cause one of my WiFi devices didn't like me having special characters at all (It would connect but only after multiple attempts and then it would no longer respond to any further changes I might wish to make to it). When I discovered the flaw, definite device flaw, it was a minor annoyance to change all my other devices, but it was easily worked around.

Have you maxxed out your router?
          https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/204363110-Connect…

If you're at or above the max limit, you might be experiencing an issue where all the bulbs are pinging the router when it comes back online and it just can't cope, so it ignores all of them.
(take into account your phones and any other WiFi devices that might be trying to reconnect too)

        • @scubacoles:

First of all I don't need to justify how often I change router settings, especially for the sake of a light bulb.

To answer your questions. I changed a bunch of settings to go along with LIFX's trouble shooting, which disconnected the bulb each and every time.

Plus I have the misfortune of owning a Netgear router. Netgear's firmwares are so bad that you never know when some function is going to be broken and you're forced to constantly up/downgrade, doing a factory reset every time. To give you an idea:
          https://community.netgear.com/t5/DSL-Modems-Routers/Nighthaw…

And no there are no non alphanumeric characters in my wifi password. I've already changed the channel from auto to various ones between 1-11 and the SSID from hidden to broadcast in order to be LIFX-compatible.

The router is not maxed out, it has less than 10 devices connected. Granted it's a Netgear D7000 with horrible broken firmware which could be contributing to the issues but there's not much I can do about that.

Judging by the plus votes and other replies as well as the posts I found trying to troubleshoot, there are others experiencing similar issues. Whether it's faulty bulbs or heat or incompatibility with networking equipment I don't know. What I do know is that these LIFX bulbs often don't work reliably. My one is flaky as hell and I am free to share my experiences without having to prove them.

    • Got my first two a week ago and haven't had any issues with iOS.

    • I haven't had any problems with them when I reboot my router. Android app sometimes takes a few minutes to show their correct status and be able to turn them on/off, but apart from that I've had a good experience with them.

    • That's a bit strange, I've not had a single problem with them and i have 4

    • I ended up having to set a static IP for my bulbs, they worked fine after a router reset but wouldn't reconnect to the cloud thing.

    • My first 4 were fine. The 5th seemed fine at the start. 6th out of the box didn't connect properly so I unplugged it. Since installing the 5th the app recognises them all much slower and a few times hasn't responded properly.

Guessing the last two are from a bad batch since it was flawless before that.

    • +1

I can just agree, bought 2 of the color ones and couldn't get them connected via my phone as it would drop out with the "Onboarding issue", I tried my pad afterwards but same issue. I tried the second one and when i wanted to swap them I noticed that the bulb is getting untouchable hot. same issue with the second one. I than tried the Windows 10 app and after resetting the bulbs numerous times and getting in as long as they are cold it would work eventually. Support was quick but as said before the general trouble shooting. I wonder who would put them in ceilings or confined spaces as I wouldn't feel comfortable!

  • So if these are dimmable through wireless, is it also ok if you have an actual dimmable switch as well? Thanks

    • I wonder this as well. All my lights have dimmer switches.

    • +4

You will need to leave your dimmer switch to maximum. The bulb will not adjust its brightness with the dimmer.

      • Whats the point of leaving the light dimmer switch to maximum if as you say it will not adjust its brightness?

        • +1

Dimmer switches are dying out, and will need to be replaced anyway, since they are useless now. They worked on old light bulbs. They didn't really "dim" anything, they just reduced the power going to the bulb. That crudely and clumsily "dimmed" old-fashioned last-century light bulbs, but doesn't really work on LEDs, of course, which are electronic (like your computer) not just current heating up a wire (like your toaster).

So if you really don't want to get proper light switches yet, this will still work, just don't screw up the power going to your delicate LED+wifi bulbs by dimming the dimmer. These just need steady power, and you can dim them (a thousand times more precisely, and on timers, etc etc) using the app.

        • +1

@mgowen: Interesting, about to do a renovation (big one) so this is something worth considering. Appreciate the reply.

        • To resolve the issue you are having, best to buy a normal bulb for your light that has a fixed dimmer switch, and purchase another light and light switch, and employ an electrician to install another circuit for that light and light switch specifically for this LIFX bulb.

        • +1

@chriskq: feel free to message me any questions and I can also quote you up for larger orders.

  • I got the colour one months ago.

It worked well for a month or so then started to go "offline". Reconnecting worked sometime. Restarting the setup process with all the schedules around the week takes me 15 minutes. I ran out of patient and have it off now.

I wonder if anyone knows that we can save the settings on "cloud" with our LIFX account and reapply them?

    • Have you updated the firmware? Try doing it on a PC if you haven't

  • +1

Do these work with amazon echo (Alexa)?

    • Yep, there's a Smart Home skill

  • Anyone else who bought a colour 1000, do you feel like its not 1000 lumens at max brightness? I swear my old ikea bulb (600 lumens) is brighter.

  • Beware of the voltage!!! 240V in Australia, 110V in USA. This appears to be a USA store.

    • +3

Buy the correct fitting and it'll be fine

      E26 Edison Screw - Low voltage: 100-120V (US, Japan…)
      E27 Edison Screw - High voltage: 200-240V (AU, UK…)
      B22 Bayonet Cap - High voltage: 200-240V (AU, UK…)

      https://support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/201622624-E26-vs-…

    • LIFX will only let you order Australian fittings if you have an Australian shipping address.

  • How is this compared to Xiaomi Yeelight?

    • +1

The LIFX is much better. The Yeelight app is awful and LIFX bulbs saves their state and settings internally.

  • +2

Hey there!! Any specific questions about LIFX and the differences between models feel free to reply or message me. But to be honest the community normally answer them before I can ;p

  • +2

I've been looking for white bulbs I can change to cool in summer, and warm in winter. There's some psychology around it… basically - you save a tonne on heating/cooling because the perceived temperature is different. Thanks OP! These are perfect

  • Anyone tried both these and MiLight/LimitlessLED? The cheapskate in me favours MiLight but I'd like to know what I'm missing…

  • +1

Code no longer works (This code did not match any active gift card or discount. Was it entered correctly?)

    • Maybe expired? I bought 2 bulbs using the code.
