Looking for a Good Tablet for Digital Art

Hello all you digital artists of OzBargain. I need some help.

Being an amateur/hobby/enjoyment artist I have for the past couple of years, used a Samsung Series 7 Slate PC with the wacom digitiser pen for most of my art needs. What I liked about that was that it was all self-contained like a Cintiq Companion.

Unfortunately, today upon powering it up I found that the pen no longer registers on the screen at all. This has happened before, but a restart of the tablet had always fixed it. This time it did not.

I have a couple of options;

  1. Buy replacement digitiser pen for about $60 on eBay

  2. Upgrade display tablet to something a little better (i.e. cintiq/huion gt220)

  3. Use regular intuos-type tablet

Now this being OzBargain, I don't really want to pay too much but if it was to upgrade to something LIKE a Cintiq companion but cheaper, I would probably pay a little more.

So far I have looked at SP4, Huawei Matebook and Galaxy TabPro S, but are all a little more than I would like to pay, especially considering I bought the Series 7 for $300

I don't really want to just buy a replacement pen because I feel that the $60 asking price is a bit steep, but do realise that it is the cheapest and probably most simple solution. (I guess I just want to use this as an excuse to upgrade)

Thanks in advance

  • Gonna get negged for this but iPad Pro 12.9 + Apple Pencil. I do graphic design at uni and its excellent. Expensive tho, and you may not want to spend that amount of money just for something to draw.

    • I see no reason to neg.

Yes it may not fit my criteria for price, but it does seem to be the benchmark for a good portable tablet for drawing.

The only other thing that concerns me about an iPad is that I would be wanting to use the full photoshop program and file storage/moving is my other concern.

I have just also been looking at external tablet monitors because although they are not portable, they do seem more in my desired price range. In particular, the XP-Pen 22 which is ~$770 on aliexpress.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

      • I get Adobe CC as part of Uni, so it lets me use the cloud features of Illustrator Draw. Honestly it does everything I want to, and it syncs so when I open up my Mac at home its there for fine tuning/printing, etc. Also when I'm at home I use an app called AstroPad which lets me use the Pencil + iPad Pro as a drawing pad by connecting it to my iMac. Little lag and works perfectly.

  • Is it maybe the USB cable that's broken?
If it is, there's a fix with photos here.

  • Maybe a Chinese tablet, Cube i7 Book?

    • I had thought about that, but I'm just concerned about how well it would run photoshop. Also if something goes wrong with it, dealing with warranty/repairs could be a hassle
