Extended Warranty for TV from Bing Lee

I just need to get an advice here. In 2011 I bought a TV for $2800 from Bing Lee with extra 5 years extended warranty for $289. Just few days after 5 years TV broke down and I contacted Bing Lee to claim the warranty. Bing Lee advised me that the extended warranty covers maximum of 5 years including manufactures warranty. I honestly was in the impression that the 'extended' warranty starts only after the manufacturer’s warranty expires and I am still covered.

Do you guys think I can get any help from fair trading regarding this matter?

Nah unfortunately is a maximum of 5 years because 80% of TV's break after that time period - eg yours

Look at the terms and conditions on your extended warranty, it should state in black and white how it works. Then you can definitively tell bing lee what it states, and have it sorted.

You also have your states statutory warranty, in NSW you have warranty up to a reasonable time length depending on the cost of the item and reasonable use. You might want to contact the manufacturer, if its Samsung, you have a good chance of getting it repaired directly by them still.

Basically extended warranty is just a waste of money.

It won't be in Black and White if it is a Colour TV. lol

      Anyhoo… if it anything like:
      https://media.binglee.com.au/media/Easicare_Customer_Care_Pl…

it will be 4EW (Page 9)

      Code
      4EW = 4 (four)* years
*The Bing Lee Easicare Plan commences at the expiration of the original Manufacturer’s Warranty for Your Product. If Your Product is replaced by the manufacturer, your Bing Lee Easicare Plan and original warranty expiry date remains the same.
Please note for each Code above, the relevant Bing Lee Easicare Plan has a maximum cover of five (5) years from the Original Date of Purchase of Your Product

  • Thank you all for the replies. So it seems there is no point of writing to fair trading it seems? I guess I will have to get it repaired at my own cost. Could anyone recommend me a good repairer near Seven Hills, NSW?

You didn't read above properly. NSW has a statutory warranty that is for a reasonably expected lifespan of the product. You take this up with the manufacturer. I would expect a $2800 to to last over 5 years, after 5years it may not be perfect, but it should be working.

      • FYI I didnt put a negative vote :)

        Thanks for the info buddy.

Our Samsung also died a month ago, it was 3 years old (with a 6mth warranty??!!) - i contacted Samsung directly, they said they will send out a repair man for free. Repair man took the tv, called back a week later stating there are no parts available - Samsung called me back and gave us 3 options. 1 replacement tv, full refund or samsung store credit - we took the full $3099 refund and bought another brand new tv which is 10" bigger!
So I would highly suggest calling the manufacturer and see if you are lucky, they might cover the repairs out of goodwill :)

    • Thank you for the information. My TV also a Samsung one. I will contact the manufacturer and see what would be their response. Only concern is now the TV is just more than 5 years old, probably the manufacturer might not bother at all. But worth giving a try for sure thinking that I spent $2800 + $289 and should my try my best to recover some of it.
