Hi, just wondering if anyone have successfully tried to use WhatsApp in a dual sim android phone (eg Xiaomi Redmi Note 3). Setup: Sim 1 for data only, Sim 2 for voice only. WhatsApp account is currently verified via Sim 2 mobile number. Can WhatsApp account that's been verified using Sim2 mobile number be reached via mobile data via Sim1 (both SIM are in the phone)?
I have googled it and get conflicting solutions, some suggesting using third party apps etc (not available in official Play Store), which I want to avoid if possible.
Thank you.

Tried to avoid multiple account if possible. As @greenpossum said below, if WhatsApp use IMEI to identify the account, then as long as the phone is the same, it should work. Will test it out when my second SIM arrive (my second SIM will be a data only, ie tablet SIM, Vodafone 8G $25 6 months expiry), mainly for my son to play Pokemon Go, but want to be able to contact him occasionally via WhatsApp.
I think WA associates with the IMEI when the number is verified so it doesn't matter which SIM is providing data or even if the original SIMs are present. This works for me for text but I don't think calls would be any different.
Thank you.
I'm pretty sure whatsapp allow you to change phone number.
Sure, but you have to verify on the new phone number. But that's not what the OP was asking anyway.
Yes. I have exactly the same setup on a Samsung S5 930FD. Sim1 with data, Sim2 activated with whatsapp. Working for years without problem. Even if sim1 is out of data, whatsapp will still work over wifi.
Thank you.
I'm using the Mi5, and have 2 instances of whatsapp running (1 whatsapp for each sim), as long as there's a data (after activation via SMS), both works well
http://xiaomitips.com/guide/how-to-activate-cloned-apps-feat…Ideally, I would prefer just one instance of WhatsApp running. The data sim is a prepaid throw away sim so I don't want WhatApp to be link to that sim.
I don't think default whatsapp app allows integration of multiple accounts (which is essentially what you are looking for), may be third party apps do, I'd be interested to know as well
