Looking for best price 2016 Kia Carnival SLi

Hello,

We are looking at buying a 2016 Kia Carnival SLi diesel, I've spoken to a couple of dealers (I'm country Victoria with only one Kia dealer in town, next is 3 hours away). Best price so far is $53,500 drive away, but they did text me today asking what it would take to get the sale. Our budget is only $50,000, not sure if it's realistic to get one for this budget.

We have ABN and are registered for GST, although car will be used mainly for private use. What would be the best approach to get the best price? Also, is it worth waiting for any "special" deals from Kia to come up?

Any help greatly appreciated, I'm not very experienced buying cars.

Thanks.

Are selling it for less than $50,000 so it's definitely possible. Different state though so not sure how that will affect it.

  • Yes buying from interstate is a real consideration if I want to get under $50,000. I might have to ring vicroads and ask if there are extra transfer fees to pay. Thank you for your help.

    • Although the one in the link is petrol not diesel which does effect the price. We are after diesel.

  • Darn it mogy, now you've done it, you've gone and low-balled yourself to 50K. Dear oh dear oh dear. You realise in doing that you have missed out on buying your Kia this weekend! Darn It! Even more so as this now puts delivery a another week behind aaarrrgggjhjjj!… It is getting close to Christmas you know..
    .
Ask yourself, how much is my time worth to me…Do you really want to wait another six weeks for a factory bonus that had probably been applied retro-speculatively in the price you got last month anyway…
    .
10% is a good figure to aim for. See how close you can get to that from your local dealer and you can have your life back…

    • Lol thanks, I will work on at least 10%, lucky new baby isn't due until next year :)

  • Hang on, back up a bit, $50k+ for a Kia…dafuq…you can get a Tarago etc for that; sure, it won't be diesel, but at least you'll have decent resale value!!! Hell, you could even quite literally buy TWO Proton or LDV people movers for the same price!

IMHO diesel is a load of wank for a passenger vehicle anyway…says the owner of a TD! ;)

The pitfalls of diesel that people don't realise are:
      1) Costs more at the pump
      2) Normally about a $3k premium over a petrol model
      3) Services are more expensive
      4) You have to definitely ensure you service the car as per logbook.
      5) With many have DPF's, they can't be used for short trips, they need to be taken on longer runs to clean the filter out, otherwise bye bye engine (eventually, see point 4)

OP - Just go in there, ready to sign @ $50k. Really, $50-53k isn't a big jump (not like $12-15k for example), but just say that's the top of your budget. Don't do it over the phone, don't do it over email. In person.

ABN doesn't mean anything to the dealer, you don't have a fleet

  • Call one of those fleet/broker guys (usually if you a part of a big company, professional associations etc.). Tell them this is the car and specs I want (You need to be 100% clear as this service does not include test drives etc.). Let broker know if you can get it for me for 48K then I will buy it. They will contact at least 3 dealers usually and get them to tender for your business. If they can't get you 48K then see what they can do for you as you can always back out as your obligation was only if they got it for 48K.

That's the best and easiest way if you know your values. If you don't have connections with these brokers then play the game of calling and leaving your credit card number with them over the phone and tell the dealers if they can get you that price then the business is theirs and play them off each other if they can't. End of month helps but I will do it about 5 business days before the end of the month as this process can take around 3 days

The above works more with higher end brands as clearly the $ markup (not %) is a lot lower. The reason the broker is better then you calling dealership is you may not be able to get to the guy who can do that price (broker know the dealership and has goodwill with the people higher up) and they do it as their JOB. Going in there yourself I would not recommend as they will always start with "what it would take to get the sale today?" but if you do then still give them your credit card details before negotiating as it is an effective way to show you mean business

    • FYI, brokers don't have goodwill with the dealership, rather they bring a customer to a dealership that otherwise wouldn't have gone there (ie you could be miles away from where they live/work, so buyer was never going to buy through you). Not to mention, all brokers charge a $500-$1000 finders fee, so that obviously comes into the bottom line of 'best price'.

      • "goodwill" for me in that instance means that they know that the broker is not just testing the market as they have a brief on the exact model and specs and that the buyer is genuine and no hassles (e.g. test drive). They have dealt with each other multiple times so there would be trust there (as opposed to a complete random coming off the street). Of course there is a finders fee as they are a business and this argument is not relevant as Mortgage brokers would not be in business as well if we could all find the best deals when we approach institutions ourselves. From personal experience the brokers price has been better then any that I was able negotiate to for myself (Both Cars were German brands in last 2 years)

Just to follow up, we sign a contract with our local dealer today, $51k drive away with floor mats and a tank of fuel.
