Samsung Galaxy S5 - Best Way to Transfer Data?

Hey All :)

I need to reboot my SGS5 phone back to factory settings & wanted to know what is the best & safest way to save all my pics, contacts & videos? Would using an SD Card work fine or is there another way that would work better. Cheers all :)

with my Sony (assume samsung will be similar) I just used their software, it backed up all contacts texts photos etc to my computer.

then plug the new phone in and restored to that. all was fine.

I could have done it to a micro SD but I didn't have a big enough one at the time.

Had to do the exact same thing recently. I just transferred using KIES, making sure I copied stuff off the card as well in case

Ensure that Google backs up your contacts (it should save them to your Google account, something cool that I found out), and between Google and Samsung logins you should be able to restore: Contacts, Messages, Calendar etc etc :)

But make sure you know both logins ;)

    • Thanks Guys I might give Kies a go & see how it goes :)

  • I generally use:
    - The Samsung contact App to save all contacts to SIM and Cloud
    - an App from the Play Store to backup all SMS
    - root, and TiBu (Titanium Backup) to backup all apps and app data

I simply let the new phone:
    - handle contacts from SIM and cloud
    - restore SMS using the same App to the phone's SMS app (or your Message App of choice)
    - download all Apps from the PlayStore (so the proper versions will get installed)
    - I restore the App Data by using TiBu (get the PRO version, as the free version restores these one-by-one instead of a batch)

Its a sucky process, but its the best one for Android.
iPhones are much better in this regard, as they can backup/restore everything to same order when upgrading your device.

    • S2,S3,S4 ises Kies, S5 and above uses Kies3. I definitely wouldn't delete anything from your old phone until you are sure it's all on the new phone.

I never had much luck with Kies, don't think it backs up messages even though it says it does. It's brilliant for editing contacts, much easier to do it on a computer than phone, eg If you want to do major changes like add +613 to all Victorian contacts. Can't edit contacts with Kies3.

I would recommend if you are not using Kies, to export all contacts to the micro SD, take screen shots of your pages and apps.

I never put any contacts on the SIM. SIM can only hold 500 contacts i think. I prefer everything on the phone so if you swap SIMs you have them on the phone.

I use SMS Backup and Restore from Play Store. Need to find the two files after backup and move them to the SD card. Rhen take out the SD card and put in new phone and import contacts and restore messages using the same app.

I think if you log into Google account using the same email, then all your apps just appear.

Smart Switch is for S6 and above I think.

      Good luck.

      • Smart Switch is now compatible with Galaxy devices with Android 4.0 and higher.

        • Yeah, I have to move s4 to s5 tonight, will try it out.
