Thoughts on this as my first car?

Thanks for your time

EDIT: Thanks for the input. I'm well aware that it is a risk, was just wondering whether it was one worth taking. Seems like everyone has agreed that it is best to stay away.

Its banged up on the back, signs of damage on the front (license plate buckled). Description says there's no rego.

I'd stay away based on pics and description, it doesn't exactly look loved!

QLD plates, but buying in Vic might make things harder as well.

A good dealer would define the vehicle as having had more hits than Elvis.look for words in advertising such as garaged, recently serviced, road worthy certificate supplied, inspections welcome. If unsure get mechanical report prior to purchase one more tip good cars normally smell good.

Its been up there for a month, so atleast a few people have inspected it and walked away by this time. Best to take it for a test drive.

Looks like it's had a hard life. Low profile tyres on alloys, chrome tip on the exhaust add and the clown photo as the sellers profile pic add up to boy racer in my book. I wouldn't buy it without a test drive, a current roadworthy certificate and a large appetite for risk.

    • This car looks like it can do good skids A+++

    • Well spotted euphemistic. I'd walk away from the car. In fact, I wouldn't even look at it. Scumtree isn't the place to buy a car. It is a place that people who cannot sell their cars on carsales.com.au go to sell. If you have a half decent car, you wouldn't skimp and sell on a free listed site (my two cents). It also looks like the car has not had an easy life. Dents throughout and the "clown" can't even vacuum it for a sale. With just that small amount of information, I'd also 'guess' the boxer has been thrashed. The heads on these engines tend to die after a time. As there are two heads (which is better than one haha) you would 'want' to swap both (even if only one has gone). Costs can be astronomical.

Edit: I didn't even read the ad to make my assumptions… Having read the ad I would like to ask for my 10 minutes of life back in posting this…

Edit edit: "Clown" can't spell or type an ad appropriately. Never ever buy from (form?) someone who only abbreviates when they write/uses ALL CAPS.

      • Car is stock by pics. Front and rear bumper has been removed previously. Left outside a lot by the look of the uv damage to headlight lens. Exterior dents and bumps is likely it's always been parked outside on the street in a built up area(which it is) and clowns tend to jump and kick cars.

This engine is tough but check engine matches frame and an RACV check(if possible).

Gumtree is a place for buying cheap cars. Some people actually do that and prefer not to spend a squillion dollars on a shiny one from the dealer.

I'm about to sell my car, and I wont be listing it on carsales because it is a cheap car ($3k-ish) but will be listing it on free gumtree and sticking a sign in the window and parking it on the main road all day. I wouldn't use carsales for anything worth under $10k.

    • One careful owner - the rest thrashed it

  • Just like other's have pointed out… it doesn't look that well.
Subaru's are usually great cars, but when they start getting older and accumulating km's sometimes their boxer engines can be a bit tricky to maintain.
But nowhere as bad as a Mercedes, Audi or BMW's maintenance mind you.

If you're dead set, check out cars from this list:
    http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-cars-vans-utes/melbourne-city/carmileageinkms-200000/caryear-2007/c18320l3001571r100?price=3000.00__5000.00&fromSearchBox=true

I'd recommend cars that are 2007 (and up) as soon it will be 2017, so the car will enter its 10th year.
I'd also recommend cars that are below 150,000 kms.
    And I'd recommend a mid-sized Auto for a novice.
Also to be able to get a good quality car that's easily serviced and has all the basic bells and whistles I'd recommend:
Japanese -> Korean/Aus -> European -> Crap brands (Cherry, Proton, Great Wall, Tata etc)
In particular: Honda, Mazda, Subaru, Toyota (all depending on the model, of course)
However, this is going to be difficult/impossible to find for $3,000… but you will have success in the $6,000 mark, and your money would be much better spent.
(because sometimes it is CHEAPER to buy something more expensive, think about that oxymoron for a second)

PS I myself will probably be looking into getting a new used car too, if all goes ok.

  • Ah yes, one of the Newtown family, that explains the pic of the owner Jordon. Give this a good vacuum before driving it.

  • From the driving experience the 2006-2007 non-turbo Impreza is not a good car to learn on. The engines were a terribly old 2.0 litre design. They drank HEAPS of premium unleaded fuel. Produced terrible power. The automatic would probably be even slower. You really need to test drive one of these before you buy because they are much slower than their specifications and marketing.

The Impreza R model was bought by a lot of owners who couldn't afford the WRX with the award winning 2.5 litre turbo. Don't be surprised to find some of the R models to have had a hard life.
