With that budget I would suggest 2nd hand, can get good items at great prices.
    what is your postcode?

    • Wouldn't mind a second hand either :) if it is good value.
      Postcode 2600

      • Have a look ebay or gumtree there are often good systems at great prices, just need to check what is available in your area.

Have you ever thought of using a soundbar with Sub? They have come along way in recent years, and the newer models can fill a large room with good sound and they look a lot neater than a full fledged 5.1 setup.

I did a review on the SAMSUNG HW-J651, and was impressed with its sound and features.

Samsung has just released a new setup which has wireless surrounds, but it may not be available in Aust just yet.

I current run a Bose soundbar, and it's honestly is a good setup, and I don't no how they get that much bass out of the little sub, but it can shake the windows, but the base model starts from $1599.

Your Budget of $1000 might be too low for Receiver + 5.1 setup. A decent budget receiver only will come in around $400-$500.

    • I did look at the soundbar + sub option at the Bose store and was impressed. But as you mentioned they are expensive as well, the one that I did like was around $2300 and that was at DFO in Sydney.
I had an rough idea about the receiver prices, but don't know much (actually not at all) about the speakers.
From memory I saw a Yamaha receiver and Klipsch speaker setup around $1000 at Costco, so I was trying to figure out what else half decent can I land at that price.
I don't claim to be an audiophile :)

Number one rule in audio, you have to like the sound. You can read all the reviews, but it their option.

Klipsch have a good name, but for me they are too bright, so I skipped them, but if you liked them, then its not a bad starting point.

I found an unopened PSB 5.1 pack on ebay that the guy was auctioning off with no reserve. It retails for $1200 in Perth WA, and I liked the sound, so I bid and got it for $275 delivered. I already had a 12" PSB sub, so I sold the 8" sub that came with the pack for $300 on Gumtree. Best buy I ever bought.

You should look around on Gumtree 2nd hand. I would probably suggest getting the AV Receiver new, as it comes with warranty, but speakers generally last, so savings to be had.

Are you looking for Bookshelf/Small speakers or Floor standing?

    • Leaning more towards bookshelf speakers. Any recommendations?
      Wouldn't mind getting a similar deal ;)

        SPEAKERS
I have a pair of http://www.selby.com.au/q-acoustics-white-stereo-speaker-c20…. Excellent quality, great reviews, and the white/sleek design is really nice and minimalist to match my setup. Not a fan of those big stupid Sony Muteki systems. I used to have Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s but while they sounded amazing, they were huuuuuuuuuuuuuge and looked stupid on my entertainment unit

        AMP
Since amps are kind of a dime a dozen right now, i'd focus on what features you specifically want NOW. Save the money, don't try to by totally future proof since 4K equipment has a long way to go until its common place or useful. I grabbed a 7.1 Yamaha (for my bi-wiring) from Harvey Norman onsale for $450 last year. It doesn't have 4K (which I didn't want) but has decent amount of power since i'm not running a cinema, and also has Audio Return Channel, auto-setup, and most of all it has a wifi-system built in for streaming my tunes without aux.

        (OPTIONAL) SUBWOOFER
I grabbed a 2nd hand Klipsch SW100 (10inch downward firing) off ebay for $100. Its a very good quality sub. Sounds nuts when its all cranked up, so i don't run it full volume and with full spectrum. It really depends on how much basss you want to put out. The bookshelf speakers do a good job on their own, and the amp can up your bass if you want. If you like in an apartment, DO NOT GET A SUBWOOFER unless you like your neighbours visiting you to complain

        (OPTIONAL) CENTRE SPEAKER
I was lucky enough to find a Jamo Centre 200 for (get this) $2 at my local op shop back in 2010. I wouldn't expect you'd get a deal like that again…….I'm just bragging

Yes i know that's not quite under $1k (close thogh), but i'm just saying you can probably get away with a cheapish amp, decent sub, then spend the money on good speakers

Are you wanting to go full 5.1 straight away, or start off with 2.1 and then buy as you go?

    By bookshelf, are you talking

No worries. That one is the Klipsch Quintet, a nice little system.

        Then there is.

Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System
        Wharfedale Moviestar DX-1
        PSB Alpha LR1
        B&W MT50
        Boston SoundWare XS 5.1
        Pioneer SP-PK22BS

I don't know how hard it is to find these in Canberra, but its a start.

Best thing is find local hifi and home theatre stores, and listen to different setups.

        • sure thing. that is what I am going to do next, try finding as many of the setups and listen.
Is this Pioneer VSX-830 any good?

Looks like a decent receiver with all the features that you will ever need. Good price.

The review on AVProduct Reviews is a good read.

          @hckr:

If you only need the one zone I think the VSX 830 will work well, some will tell you there is a newer model out however I think it will cover off everything you want and it gives you room on some speakers. I posted a deal for the VSX 930 that a few bought a few weeks back and that model was confirmed HDR compatible so you just may want to check that feature, it was in a firmware update so check recent firmware for this model and see what was in it. On speakers, I started out with second hand wharfedale diamond 9.6, 9.1 and a 9CM center about 7 years back. I am very happy with wharfedale and still hold my 9.6 bought of eBay for a steal. I just purchased two pairs of diamond 220 at $349 a set in JB HiFi sale last week, they sound really good even though not fully run in and also bought the WH-D10 in the same 40% sale. so my recommendation is second hand wharfedale speakers. Good luck.
