iPhone VoIP/Cheap/Free Call Apps

Anyone have any experience with the voip/free calls/cheap calls apps for iphones. I've looked at a few websites and sites for programmes like icall, fring, voipstunt, friendcaller and a bunch of others. Finding it hard to work out the differences. Some have call rates listed that are very cheap and some have no rates. They all say they are free even when they have rates.

I have wireless at home and would love to call internationally cheaply on my iphone (to iphone or to other mobiles). Anyone tried any of these or know if they work in Australia (a few programs had comments that they work everywhere but Aust).

  • Hi Roadtrip!

I use Skype for iphone to iphone which is free anyway..

But other calls..i use an APP called MV from voipraider.com which i think its the same as voipstunt

because i use it alot my account gives me free credits to most of countries…these credits come in form of days..Most Developed countries are free..with some mobile ones free too

i have the same setup similar as yours..the iphone just connects to my wireless and MV just connects and just works fine..

  • Fring is currently useless for VoIP, there's a huge delay which makes calls unusable. This is due to there being only UK servers, so everything has to go to the UK, then to the receiver of your call and vice versa.

  • better to get a separate VOIP account (your ISP might be the cheapest, check call rates too). I'm with EXETEL
And use a VOIP app , that allows you to use any account

I'll recommend iSip … works great for even local calls over 3G,

With this setup, you can change VOIP account (if a cheaper one comes out), and still use the same app

    Good Luck

  • THANKS everyone!! this is marvellous….I'm so excited i've just sent all my friends messages about how great iphones are…i'm a total apple convert
I've gone with skype for use at home or when on wifi to call others with skype free and since i already use voipstunt at home (its dirt cheap just kind of crappy line) i've also got MV.
so at the moment get 3G calls via skype but that will have charges in a few months….i have to work out what you mean ozblogger. what do u mean by a separate voip account?? don't they all use wireless or 3 G (i'm hesitant about using the 3G in case that rocks up a huge 3G bill)

  • Well, Apple being Apple and the phone companies protecting their extortionate profits, they quashed Google's Voice app…
