Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge for $870 from BuyMobile. Legit?

Hi. I have been looking around for new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's and found a good deal on one but thought I should wait for my contract to expire before I buy one (going in a contract was a big mistake).

However, my current phone has gotten a lot worse. It keeps rebooting randomly, and when it isn't doing that it is very slow. I've already reset it. I don't want to get it sent off to Samsung and have to wait weeks to get it back, so was thinking of asking Optus (my provider) if they could let me out of contract as compensation or put a credit on my bill. Is that reasonable?

Anyway, I've found this website called 'Buy Mobile', and they are selling the phone for $870. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the company and whether their phones are legit. I'm looking for a brand new Black S7 Edge with 32GB+ storage, so if anybody finds a good deal on one, please let me know. I'm getting desperate so unfortunately don't have to much time to wait for a deal :( I'm looking to stay off contract because I have a grandfathered Freedom Plus SIM with Telstra as well as my own app so I can get 70% cash back on my recharges. This means I can get 3GB, Unltd Calls&Txts for $12 or 4GB, Unltd Calls&Txts for $15.

Phone in question is here: https://buymobile.com.au/products/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-32g….

    You can always ask. It won't hurt. But be reasonable when talking with the operator. You are contracted so as to pay off the phone, correct? They didn't manufacture the phone, they merely put up the cash for it in the expectation that you would pay them back for it. That it has started to malfunction before you have paid them back isn't really their problem, but yours. So when asking, keep that in mind, and be as sweet as can be. You may just get a generous response.

    Having said that of course, you have certain rights under consumer law (which are between yourself and the retailer - in this case Optus). Maybe someone with more knowledge can suggest that you do have more of a right to what you're asking than what I've suggested?

    • Yeah I'm aware of all that. The consumer law says that you can seek a remedy from either the retailer or the manufacture, but in this case the retailer (Optus) can't do much with the problem so they will most likely just ship the phone off to samsung for a repair, and I don't want that, because I don't think it's a problem that can be fixed without a replacement.

      • +1

        So you could go to Samsung directly and see what they think eg. how long to fix.

    • +3

      They didn't manufacture the phone, they merely put up the cash for it in the expectation that you would pay them back for it.

      Irrelevant. The phone is still under warranty - if it's faulty it's up to Optus to provide a solution.

    go to more well known places such as DWI and cheaper too.

  • Okay, i didn't post a referral or affiliate link. But it got deleted. Not cool.

    Go somewhere like DWI, they're more well known for grey stock and cheaper as well.

    • The "?afid=7" in the link was the trigger for automatic unpublishing. I've fixed that up.

      If you do share a DWI link later on make sure you remove anything that appears after the .aspx in the link. Stuff will appear after the .aspx when you click through a Google ad or an affiliate site.

        Awesome, noted. Thanks :)

    It's not clear from their listing which model this S7E is. The G935FD would probably be the one to get (dual sim)

    Cheaper here through this deal at Unique Mobiles - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/263851

    Use the code 'DOUBLE32' for a free 32GB sd card. Also 'RC616' should give another $5 off if you can stack them. I've ordered a couple of phones from them in the past & got another in transit now. Never had a problem with them or when needing to contact them via phone/email.

    Link to the G935FD's - https://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=g93…

    • Ok, I see this is a grey import. Why are these grey imports so much cheaper? What are the downsides to getting a grey import? Dual SIM would be really useful.

      • +2

        no factory warranty is a big difference.

        • +1

          That's the only difference and it's not worth paying the extra for. Like everything that is sold here in Oz we pay much more to buy locally sourced/sold Vs import stuff.

        • +1

          @tight-ass: Nah, there other stuff like paying GST. But I think warranty is a pretty good thing to have, read too much on OzB about warranty nightmares on grey stock.
          I guess some people are OK wth it, I am not. Cheap stuff I risk it, not things heading towards $1k.

          @PVA:

          My cut-off is usually around half that around $500.
          If something is say $400 as grey import vs $700 here, I'd chance it (given reputable seller/PayPal protection).
          But if its more on the lines of $600 grey, and $700 here, then its a more difficult decision… and might be better buying locally depending on the type of item it is (likely to break/warranty issues/etc etc).

      • +1

        The one you linked above is also a grey import as it only comes with a 12 month warranty. I've purchased over 10 mobiles from overseas now and I've either never had a problem with them in that 2 year period anyway, so buying locally and paying more would have been a waste of money or I've sold them after 2 years.

        • +1

          Wow if factory warranty is the only difference then it seems like grey import is for me. Is it like other dual sim phones where one SIM is 2G only and the other is 3G/4G or are they both 3G/4G?

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          correct - one sim is only for 2G (soon to be discontinued here in Oz) and the other is for 3G/4G. Still handy for when going O/S. Plus Samsung have come out and advised they'll be issuing an update for the Note 7's so that the 2G slot can be used on 3G. No time frame was given as to when this will happen, but if they do I would imagine it would be rolled out to all the dual sim phones which would be great.

          The only negative is you can't use both sim slots AND a SD card at the same time, so it's either 1 SIM / SD card or both SIMS. Saying that there are hacks to use all 3 at the same time if you're game and really need all 3 at once.

          After having a quick look it appears the cheapest you can buy the S7E locally with a 2yr warranty is $1,099 from mobileciti.

        • @tight-ass: If the second SIM is only 2G then I think I'll just get a regular version, as I'm going to be going on Telstra which is shutting off it's 2G in a couple of months. Are there any grey imports that have already been imported into Australia, ready to ship? I'd prefer not to have to wait to get the device from HK, and the (higher) possibility of it being damaged in transit

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          I'm not aware of any sellers selling grey model with stock on hand locally. Generally the phone's i've ordered arrive in 2-3 business days from O/S and are very well packed - they generally are sent in a huge box with lot's of wrap (box within a box) and you see it and think what the hell is that

        • @tight-ass: Really? That's faster than ordering from Australia. How does that work?

        • +2

          @realfancyman:

          That's not hard - Aus Post is pathetic with the time it takes them to deliver within Australia and the amount they charge.

          Further info on shipping and who they use can be found on their website - https://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/shipping

        • @tight-ass: Also, have you bought from this 'Unique Mobile' before? If not, where do you get your grey imports from?

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          Yes - 2 phones are from them previously and I've got another on the way from them right now…..another S7E which will hopefully arrive Mon/Tue

        • +1

          @tight-ass: OK, you've convinced me mate. Thank you heaps. I will purchase once I have a chat with Optus. Thanks again.

        • @tight-ass: Would you recommend that I get the Express shipping with or without insurance? The shipping without insurance is $22, whereas insurance is $33.69. Is it worth the extra ~$12?

        • +1

          @realfancyman:
          I've never bothered with the insurance, but id hate for you to not select it and your phone goes astray on your 1st o/s purchase…..your call

        • @tight-ass: I think considering the value of the phone, and that I'm already saving $100's buying the phone overseas,I'll get the insurance. Thanks for your help.

        • @tight-ass: Did you receive your S7E today? I'm going into the Optus store tomorrow to have a look at the phone in person to make sure I like the edge as well as talk about my faulty phone, think I'll just trade it in with this program.

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          No I haven't and you just reminded me to chase them up to find out where my tracking number number is too.

        • +1

          @tight-ass: ok, let me know what happens.

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          Will do.

          It probably didn't help that i actually ordered the wrong model phone to start with and that probably held things up a bit longer than usual…..I ordered the G930FD initially instead of the G935FD and had to cancel the first one and pay the difference to get the other one.

        • +1

          @realfancyman:

          Got my tracking number just now. Phone is en-route now to Perth. Delivery is due for tomorrow

          @tight-ass: Good to hear. Just purchased my S7E then :)

        • +1

          @tight-ass: Got my shipping email today. Phone will be delivered Thursday or earlier!

        • Got the phone today, wasn't home on the Thursday. Really happy with it! Thanks for your help @tight-ass.

        Stores like JB and Harvey Norman have huge warehouses in Australia, a lot of shopping centre sites and a lot of employees to pay and that's a lot of upkeep. These grey import sites have small warehouses here (some don't) and one in China or Hong Kong. They run internet shops and have fewer staff. Since they have less upkeep they have more room to lower their prices a lot more.
        That being said a lot of people prefer Australian stores for better warranty and to support an Australian business. My go to rule seems to be if its cheaper than $100 i'll go for grey stock

    • Thanks for this advise. I ordered from Unique Mobile on public holiday Monday and phone arrived to me on NSW Central Coast on Friday. Very happy with Samsung Galaxy S7 Dual SIM. Haven't used the dual sim but great to have that option for next trip to UK.

    • +1

      Yeah I decided I was going to wait until my contract with Optus expires before buying but I really need a new phone, and that deals expired now. I'm actually happy though because this grey import is much cheaper and I don't need the warranty.

      • +1

        You should get your phone fixed at Optus within the 2 year warranty if you want to get some $ on eBay when you get your new phone. Selling a broken phone just isn't worth it.

        I'd wait a while before buying S7e. Maybe few months and a 15-20% eBay coupon will bring the price down of a grey import.

        Also, have a play with the edge at Samsung store. Many people don't like the edge screen and myself I'd get the regular over the edge any day.

        • +1

          It seems you either love the edge screen or you hate it…..I love it - i think it looks much better/fancier too. I ordered a S7E for my wife and it arrived last week (we've both currently got S5's).

          I had intended on getting a Note 7, but since the recall was announced due to the problem with the battery and other issues (s-pen etc) and due to the fact I like the wife's new phone so much I ordered another S7E for me.

        • +1

          @tight-ass:

          Yeah, there is a good divide between likes and hates :) I admit it looks good, but I'm iffy about long term usability :)

          And if I had the choose between Note 7 and S7e I would go with the S7e and it is a smarter buy. I love the ability to use the spen but I used it maybe 3 times on my Note 3 (which I still have).

        • +1

          @datafellows:

          True - it wasn't worth the premium they charged over the S7E given how similar they are. I came very close to buying a blue Note 7 - saw them for sale when I was in Singapore recently and they look awesome.

  • My mum just returned her S5 to Virgin (faulty screen) and got a refurb replacement on the spot. Maybe just try going into the store and asking? Just make sure you back it up etc.

    • The thing is it's an intermittent issue. Any tips for getting a replacement/refurbishment with this issue? I'm going into the Optus store on Wednesday just to see what the edge is like but might also ask about a remedy.

      • Is there a set of circumstances to reproduce it? Or something you can screenshot?

        • It randomly reboots and freezes so I don't think so. There's nothing that triggers it, it just happens randomly.
