BPay of Rates Via 28 Degrees Charged Credit Card Fee?

Hi guys,

Just got my rates notice and it says if I pay via credit card it attracts a CC fee. Bpay does not, but I noticed when I log into my 28degrees account I can pay bills via bpay using my CC.

I'm wondering if I did log in and pay my council rates bpay via 28degrees, will I attract a CC fee?

  • Most credit providers treat BPay as cash advances so you'll most likely hit a cash advance surcharge(plus sky high interest) instead. Moreover not all BPay billers accept payments by credit card.

Definitely a cash advance, that means you will start paying 20%+ interest rate on your entire balance starting the day its processed.

  • Oh wow, thanks for the heads up guys. I didn't know that at all!!! I'm so glad I asked before trying it.

I don't believe the above. I've paid bpay from my 28 degrees and it was treated as a normal purchase.

In saying that, not all billers will accept bpay from a credit card.

    • I thought what the others had said were true, but if you have experience with this, OP, it might be worth giving 28 a call tomorrow morning and asking.

I think it will probably be like the credit card interchange system, where certain merchants have certain categories - eg. gambling sites which will be treated as a cash advance vs supermarkets being treated as a normal purchase.

On the 28 degrees site, when you log in there is a section under Customer Service, headed questions

Under Bpay there is a section says -

What does it cost. this says

BPAY is a free service to use, however your account may attract fees and charges when making a bill payment. For example, some Billers may only accept your payment as a cash advance. In these cases a cash advance fee will apply. We’ll notify you before the transaction is completed if the cash advance fee applies so you can choose whether or not to continue. There may be other fees charged by the organisation receiving the payment but you’ll need to check with each organisation.

So looks like both opinions canvassed above could be correct, depending on the biller.

But given they say that you will be advised before you continue, you can try.

  • Semi relevant but not : 28 degrees now charged me a $0.95 processing fee to pay off my 28 degs account via BPAY. found it a bit ridiculous that we are getting charged to pay off a service we are using..
