Review My PC Build

Hi guys,
I just want some input from the knowledgeable ozb's on my pc build, and any parts or combinations of parts that you would do differently or bottlenecks.
Using it mostly for games, but not the latest and greatest. Will definitely want to do a few things at once, eg: Skype, browse, play hearthstone at once.

Asus R9 380
Intel i5 6400/6500
Coolermaster Hyper-212X Universal CPU Cooler
Gigabyte Intel H170-Gaming 3
Sandisk 240 ssd
Seagate 3.5" Barracuda 1TB
Seasonic M12II EVO 520W 80+ Bronze Fully Modular Power Supply
8GB DDR4 Ram ( not sure what brand ram yet)
Case ( none selected, any recommendations? Preferably sub $100)

Thanks for any replies in advance.

  • should include a budget.

but without seeing a budget id say if you could afford to get an Rx 470 or better yet 480 as both outperforms the r9 380 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RtTzsUhwxY have a look at a comparison video

    • Thanks for the reply, the cheapest Rx 470 I can find seems to be around $120 more than the R9 380 ($169 at msy right now), so for the price difference I might stick with the R9.

I'm just wondering if the cpu I've chosen is a bit too much given my lower end gpu.

      • +1

Well you won't need the cpu cooler and the 6400 is fine since you don't plan on getting a high end gpu. I have a i5 6400 and have ordered a gtx 1070 to pair with it.

Amazon deal on here has a rx 470 for $276

Put the money saved from the cooler and cheaper cpu towards the better gpu.

        That's what I'd do

Btw for case I have a corsair spec 03 it's a great looking case for $85 but there are cheaper ones.

        • Thanks for the case call out.

Any savings I make will go towards peripherals and a monitor (currently have none of that too, and desk and seat etc too). That's the reason why I'm happy to cut corners on the gpu, and happy to lower the rest of the system to match in other to put in for what I don't have.

      • No it isn't, don't go any lower.

In fact I would try and cut corners on motherboard - meaning B150 chipset board such as the gigabyte b150m-d3h for $129 (MSY). You lose 1 16x PCI-e lane which gets replaced with a 4x and a lot of BIOS tweaks for a marginal amount of added performance.

And then spend that saving on more video card power.

(If you decide to do that then that mobo is the best B150 board for your buck)

Also check your power requirements using something like pc parts picker or AMD website, I believe you may be too low for that GPU but I might be wrong on that.

        • Thanks for your reply. Do you have any links I can go to read up on BIOS tweaking to improve performance?

        • @cloudy: Usually you can just search google for "<motherboard model> bios settings" and find recommended settings if your board is an enthusiast board.

If you want to know what they all do i couldn't recommend a guide but there must be something like that.

  • Agree with the above;
    Get a B150 motherboard
Dont worry about coolermaster cpu cooler
Get something newer\better than a r9 380 - the 3 series use lots of power and generate heaps of heat and noise.

NZXT s340 is IMHO the best case at ~100 bucks. Looks great, excellent airflow, heaps of room, hides hdd's, psu and cables. Don't need to get a modular PSU - save $30-40 and get a Corsair 600w.

Get rid of the cpu cooler, you're not going to overclock it anyways so why get it.

  • I'd wait for Kaby Lake. It's hit to hit any day now

  • I grabbed the R9 380 from MSY for $169 and it's great for the price. Only drawback is that the card is massive. Runs stuff like Fallout 4 on Ultra at 60 though.
