Hi Ozbargainers,
Long story short - Currently uni student looking for a 13-14" Laptop. Activities include work-related, gaming and so forth
Not really tech savvy and was hoping you guys can help me decipher which laptop is the best value?
I've definitely taken a preference towards lenovo specifically for their designs and apparently they have a fairly good reputation
Specifically two models i am after
- Yoga 710 - $1709
- Display: 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Touchscreen Display
- CPU: Intel i7-6500U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)
- Graphics: nVidia 940MX 2GB Dedicated Graphics - Mid Tier Graphics
- Storage: 256 SSD
- Ram: 8GB LPDDR3 RAM
- Battery: 4 cell battery
- Much thinner and lighter apparently.
- E460 - $1484
- Display: 14.0 FHD (1920x1080) IPS Non-Touch, LED backlit, IPS, AntiGlare
- CPU: Intel Core i7-6500U Processor (4MB Cache, up to 3.10GHz)
- Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 M360 2GB - Low/Mid Tier Graphics
- Storage: 256 SSD
- Ram: 16GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L (2 DIMM)
- Battery: 6 Cell Li-Ion Battery, 47Wh
Thanks in advance for everyones contribution!
Another possibility is to just buy a cheap Windows two-in-one or a low-powered notebook like the Dell Inspiron 11 series for $500 from the Dell Outlet (Core i3 6th gen, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). There is also a cheaper Pentium variant which was $319 dollars, expired now.
And then use the rest of your budget to buy a small form factor Mini ITX desktop for gaming purposes. Let's just say for $1000, you could build yourself a Core i5 / GTX 1060 / R9 380 machine and it will serve you well for perhaps 4-5 years worth of games. The GTX 940MX is already pretty outdated, you'll find yourself playing mostly older titles and newer titles can't be played on the 1080p setting.
You'd generally enjoy better performance for the dollar on a desktop, plus it's far more comfortable to work on a desktop for extended periods of time anyway.
If you are still set on a laptop, either of the two machines are pretty decent 'jack of all trades' options. Gaming is probably not even remotely enjoyable on the E460.
Also look into the Lenovo 13 ultrabook if you're after a entry level business machine. It's got a very long battery life and is extremely lightweight — but has no dGPU.
