Hi Ozbargainers,
Long story short - Currently uni student looking for a 13-14" Laptop. Activities include work-related, gaming and so forth
Not really tech savvy and was hoping you guys can help me decipher which laptop is the best value?

I've definitely taken a preference towards lenovo specifically for their designs and apparently they have a fairly good reputation
Specifically two models i am after

  1. Yoga 710 - $1709

  • Display: 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS Touchscreen Display
  • CPU: Intel i7-6500U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)
  • Graphics: nVidia 940MX 2GB Dedicated Graphics - Mid Tier Graphics
  • Storage: 256 SSD
  • Ram: 8GB LPDDR3 RAM
  • Battery: 4 cell battery
  • Much thinner and lighter apparently.
  1. E460 - $1484

  • Display: 14.0 FHD (1920x1080) IPS Non-Touch, LED backlit, IPS, AntiGlare
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6500U Processor (4MB Cache, up to 3.10GHz)
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon R7 M360 2GB - Low/Mid Tier Graphics
  • Storage: 256 SSD
  • Ram: 16GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L (2 DIMM)
  • Battery: 6 Cell Li-Ion Battery, 47Wh

Thanks in advance for everyones contribution!

  • Another possibility is to just buy a cheap Windows two-in-one or a low-powered notebook like the Dell Inspiron 11 series for $500 from the Dell Outlet (Core i3 6th gen, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD). There is also a cheaper Pentium variant which was $319 dollars, expired now.

And then use the rest of your budget to buy a small form factor Mini ITX desktop for gaming purposes. Let's just say for $1000, you could build yourself a Core i5 / GTX 1060 / R9 380 machine and it will serve you well for perhaps 4-5 years worth of games. The GTX 940MX is already pretty outdated, you'll find yourself playing mostly older titles and newer titles can't be played on the 1080p setting.

You'd generally enjoy better performance for the dollar on a desktop, plus it's far more comfortable to work on a desktop for extended periods of time anyway.

If you are still set on a laptop, either of the two machines are pretty decent 'jack of all trades' options. Gaming is probably not even remotely enjoyable on the E460.

Also look into the Lenovo 13 ultrabook if you're after a entry level business machine. It's got a very long battery life and is extremely lightweight — but has no dGPU.

  • As scrimshaw said, light weight business grade Lenovo — ThinkPad 13. However it does not have dedicated graphics so might not be that suitable for gaming (not that GT 940m or R7 M370 are any better).

You can definitely get E460 i7 for less than that — check past deals. It's entry level ThinkPad so don't pay more than $1k for it. Yoga 710 however is not a ThinkPad so won't have ThinkPad design, TrackPoint etc. Keyboard is also not as good as E460. It is however a convertible with touch screen, which I think might be useful for some.

  • probably swapout a dozen mobos on the E460 each week in my role due to faults

  • +1

If you're a uni student, then you probably want something light weight if you're expecting to carry around.

  • FYI, there is really minimal performance difference between the i5-6300u and i7-6500u. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-6500U-vs-…

So don't shy away from this as an option.

Suggest looking in the Dell outlet, particularly the latitude section for some options http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

You'll have to wait until Monday (they only fill the list during business hours). $1000 should get you a 12-13 inch light and compact business grade laptop with i5/7, 256gb SSD, 8gb RAM and a FHD screen.

  • Get a Dell Latitude laptop from the dell outlet or a Lenovo Thinkpad business laptop. Something like a T460, X1 Carbon Gen4 or T460s
