Do Any Mobile Broadband Modems Allow Bandwidth Restrictions?

Hi,

I'm looking for a mobile broadband modem that allows for limiting of bandwidth used (e.g. no more than 1GB/day). There is a confusing number of models out there - has anyone seen one with this feature?

Ideally it can be used on the Optus 4G network. I've called Optus, but they don't seem to have much idea. I was thinking if there's nothing available, perhaps I'd be able to jailbreak/customRom an existing device, but then I've got lots of research to do, so any pointers would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Brickles

Heaps of info about custom ROMs for 3G/4G modems. Archive view + ctrl-F search for quota or bandwidth.

Alternatively, you can bridge either a USB 4G modem (in 4G mode) or WiFi 4G modem (in wireless client mode) to a router running Tomato firmware, which gives you access to bandwidth control and a whole lot more (should you need it).

    Check out Advanced Tomato: advancedtomato.com

  • If your router does not support OpenWRT, you could also Rasp Pi as a router.

and then run a proxy server on the rasp Pi to limit the amount of bandwidth each day.

This is probably not easy to do !! I'd just run the modem in bridge mode in conjunction with a cheap router that does support DD-WRT.

  • Thanks juicebox12 & scrimshaw. Those look like good options, but I'm still hoping there might be a vanilla modem that will do what I want. Fingers crossed someone has seen one.

  • You might have some luck with an ADSL modem that has 4G backup (via SIM slot or USB Modem).

I believe a FritzBox allows a USB modem to be plugged in as backup and there is the capability to issue 1GB data passes to limit usage.

  • Pretty sure Android can do this by default. Get yourself a cheap 4G phone and set the period of data to 1 day and the limit to 1GB … problem solved?

  • Interesting option. Wasn't really looking at using a phone, more a dedicated 4G router for better range.
