Phone plan deals when 2G is no more

I'm still on the old Woolworths $26 per 45 days prepaid plan and I'm sure there a few Ozbargainers out there still on it as well. Because it's still limited to the 3G network, I have been keeping an eye out for a similar 4G plan for at least 6 months, but nothing seems to comparable. I'm especially not a fan of the rise of these 28 day periods.

As the 2G networks start getting turned off within the next 12 months, I was wondering if Ozbargainers are predicting there might be some more competitive phone plans coming up around this time?

Alternatively, if anyone would like to suggest a plan to replace my dear old Woolworths plan, I'm all ears.

woolworths mobile has 4g coverage. But your saying your plan doesn't?

It's an old grandfathered plan that is now operated by Optus. It hasn't been available for new sign-up for a while now.

  • what's your quota/inclusions on the old Woolworths $26 per 45 days prepaid plan?

    • Good question.
$250 world of standard calls and SMS
$250 optus to optus calls and SMS
5GB data with rollover up to 15GB
It looks like it also qualifies for the free music streaming that Optus has more recently introduced. The plan itself is really a $30 one, but because it was a Woolies product you got a discount on recharging for using the Woolies rewards card which brings it down to $26, and Optus is continuing to honour that.

I don't make a lot of call and use more data, so that's why I went with the plan originally. More recent plans seem to have unlimited calls but less data. And I can only imagine my data use would increase when going to 4G.

  • I doubt if the demise of 2G will create any campaigns. Those weren't heavy users and most 2G only phones have died. Even my ancient Nokia 2730 is 3G.

    • For a dual sims phone which only accepting 2G as the secondary sim?

      • Tough, they'll just have to use data on the same SIM or get a new phone. (I'm in that boat actually.)

        • Dual sim phone is so useful that I can use that phone number for all junk.

      • and how many users in australia do you think there are who have such phones? the vast majority of such phones are relegated to chinadroids that the majority of samsung and apple-wielding plebs wouldnt even know about.

i doubt there will be any new offers or campaigns when the 2G networks close. im kinda surprised theyre still operating, to be honest (13 years after 3G first started in australia)
