NYC or Toronto Shopping - Currency

I'll be visiting Toronto and then New York for two weeks in October, based on the current exchange rates should I expect to get better overall deals and value in Toronto (CAD) instead of NYC (USD) shopping for clothes?

Outlet malls in New York are far cheaper than Toronto

I'd would also look at buying other stuff, rather than just looking for deals on overalls.

A bit of a hike to get there, but well worth it.
Sign up to get their coupons, collect another coupon book when you are there on the day.

woodbury commons in NJ is my vote too. not too hard to get there, just catch a bus from grand central station. can also buy the coupon book from there too.

  • By a complete coincidence I have lived in both Toronto and NYC.
Much cheaper to shop in New York. Even retail there is cheaper than T.O. In October, there should be a bunch of sales going on, so look in the big stores — Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom Rack in Union Sq — and make sure you get the 'out of state' shopper's card, which gives you a discount even on sale items (and effectively refunds your NY state tax).
I concur with my fellow posters about Woodbury Common. It's a major journey, but well worth it, if you are a hardcore shopper.
Watch the NY papers for sales, do your homework before you go and you could really get some bargains.
Spend the money you save at Half-Tix on a Broadway show!

    • Thanks everyone for the responses, appreciate it. Is NYC being a better shopping destination taking into consideration the AU being on parity with CAD and tracking at 0.75 USD?

It's just the prices are a lot better, not to mention the range of products. I was living in Canada when the USD and CAD were at parity and the price tags in Canada were generally 30% more.

    • What is the out of state shopper's card and where can I get it?

      • Sorry for the slow reply, I just saw the alert…
The best place to get the card is Macy's. It is available on the mezzanine level, enter from W34th St, it's not hard to find and the floor walkers will be happy to direct you. Take your passport or Driver's licence, or both!
One of the things that is a bit of an eye opener for Aussies is the level of service you get in these stores, or at a lot of places in NYC. Service is treated seriously there, a lot different to many Aussie places.

Also, take a look at Century 21, which is downtown, nearly opposite the old World Trade Center subway stop (nearly all the lines stop there at the new station). The prices are very good, and the store had a major upgrade a few years back. It used to look a bit old-fashioned but it looks like a low-cost version of DJ's now!
Good luck, let us know how you go. I love NYC, my old neighborhood has changed a lot but it is still nearly my second home…

  • Just visited NYC. Century 21 was ok, reasonably well organised. They do a $5 - $500 gift card for instagram posts (lets face it, it's $5).

TJ Max had more bargains, but was chaos and often the sizes were wrong (hence why they are cheap I guess).

Interesting to note, Abercrombie and Fitch pricing is almost identical for US and Canada. So get their gear from Canada, as it's currently close to parity with the AUD $
