Decent Spec'd Android Phone ~AU$150 or less

Hi,

I'm looking for a cheap android phone with decent specifications (2GB RAM, 16GB storage, quad core, 4G, TF card, Android 5.1 or greater) for about $150 or less. That's right - it needs to play Pokémon Go. Please withhold the scorn - I have kids and they may even get to play it.

I was wondering whether anyone had suggestions. Also, I'd like to hear anyone's suggestions on dealing with suppliers. I tried ordering an Oukitel 4000 pro for AU$115 from everbuying, but it seems that they were happy to take orders that they couldn't fulfil, then it has been a hassle getting a refund. I would consider getting the Cubot X16 S or Dinosaur from them, but the experience has left me with no confidence that they can actually fulfil the order. I've also had mixed experiences with Gearbest in the past.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Go for something like the Xiaomi Mi4.. It's only 3G, but heaps of RAM and CPU power, decent battery and has flagship quality everything and is bargain priced.

    The Ulefone Metal 5 is very cheap and it does 4g, with a fairly large battery.

    But the processor is mid end and screen resolution is 720p.

    MTK6753 octa-core 64-bit chipset, 3GB RAM, and 16GB storage.

    Priced at under 110 us dollars

    • Thanks both very much for your suggestions. Do you know a place that stocks the ulefone at this price and is semi-reliable? Thanks!

        Here is the Ulefone for $110 USD ($144 AUD)

        Otherwise, you can also try Xiaomi Mi4c and BG are doing a promotion for it (white, yellow and pink colours only) for $120 USD. ($157 AUD)

        http://www.banggood.com/XIAOMI-Mi4C-5-inch-4G-LTE-2GB-RAM-16…

        Which one should you get? I think the Mi4C is much better overall as it has Snapdragon processor which is overall superior in terms of providing a faster GPS lock (generally speaking). The display is also 1080p.

        The downsides: you only get 16GB of memory and there is no SD card slot. This is about the only major drawback of the Xiaomi.

        The Ulefone is more user friendly — it has SD card expansion. While the screen is only 720p, it one-ups the Xiaomi by having 3GB of RAM and SD card expansion slot, plus a finger print scanner (unknown as to whether it's good or not) and a metallic construction. It's also apparently Gorilla Glass 3 protected (nobody has tested this yet).

        The touch buttons are not backlit
        Also another downside is the lack of Gyroscope, so the VR mode in Pokemon will not work. (not that you need it)

        • Awesome - thanks a lot for the suggestion. I've ended up being tight and going the Ulefone Metal. Gearbest were selling it for US$109 - > ~AU$150 so I'm rolling the dice with them. Seems like a pretty decent spec phone for the money.

          @Dr C:

          Gearbest huh? good luck, give us a review when it comes :)

        • @scrimshaw: Sure - least I can do. I'm not a phone connoisseur but I'll do my best. My only points of reference would be a nexus 5. Unfortunately I dropped it in the surf. It took exactly 0.2 seconds to kill it permanently. Using a Samsung galaxy express (GT-I8730) atm, and it really struggles. Given my past experiences with gearbest I'll be in a position to unbox in about 90 days :)

        • @Dr C:

          why Gear Best when Bang Good was slightly cheaper? (I have bought from BG before, no troubles, no idea about GearBest)

          @PVA:

          GearBest is a banned store on Ozbargain.

          If you click here and here you will see the reason why.

          GearBest however seems to have dispatched a representative who seems to be hovering around trying to randomly fix people's orders in an attempt to redeem their poor reputation. He/she can be found here

        • @scrimshaw:
          That's why I wondered why the Op ordered from them and not what you linked at banggood .

          @PVA: I actually ordered before I received the link or else probably would have gone for bang good. Fingers crossed gearbest comes through. I haven't ordered from them for a while, but did manage to get a pipo win 8 tablet and quad copter ok…

          @Dr C: Allegedly "packed" now…

        • @Dr C:
          ah, I see.

        • @scrimshaw: It's here. Just 1 short month after ordering. In one piece too. the phone build quality seems OK. Performance is alright, though I haven't really pushed it. Unfortunately I still have a micro sd so have to wait to be sent a nano to be sent out before I can put in a TF card - the configuration is 1 slot for a nano sim, then one slot for a micro sim or else a TF card which is a little inconvenient. Running marshmallow ok. Pokémon go runs. I caught a charmander then stopped. No problems so far - I think it seems like a decent sort of phone for the money, but I'm not expert. Comes with a case and a quick charger too, which hasn't burned the house down yet. I'll repost if I find a bad tevion factor.

          @Dr C:

          Nice :) Thank you for taking time to do the review

          Good that it runs PokemonGo, I think the game has become a sort of benchmark for whether a phone is decent these days…

        • @scrimshaw: Oh - battery life is not great. It'sOK but not great. I'm sure if I played pokemon go for more than 2 mins (or if the kids got hold of it) it would be dead quickly. Drops from 100-40% in about 12 hours with pretty modest use.
