Pre Built Gaming PC Just to Shake Things up

Hi guys,

I know this kind of thread is all over the place here but I'm a bit lost in the world of gaming PCs. I want to purchase a PC to play games like No Mans Sky, Overwatch, Fallout 4 and the like but also a bit of wriggle room for future capability. I also stream media with Plex. I want at least 1TB HDD but also like the speed of SSD maybe just for the OS. I see PC Byte eBay store has 20% off at the moment but I still get this feeling I'm getting ripped off.

I'm thinking this one with 20% off as my budget is around $1200 http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Quad-Core-i7-4790-4-0GHz-8G…

I guess the purpose of this post is do you think I should bite the bullet and get this one or should I use part picker and rock up to MSY and say build this for me. I don't have any PC building knowledge and am a bit time poor at the moment to try but the Ozbargainer in me is disappointed. Thanks for your help :)

  • you probably should look at something with at least 1060 but 1070 would be better. The PSU of this unit is a generic 550W one which likely won't help you with any future expansions either, IMHO, it'd be better if you go picking parts yourself and getting MSY to assemble them for you (I prefer assembling them myself but since you don't have time)

They give you a lousy case and a generic power supply. Both of which you will want to upgrade.

However, when you pick their upgrade options, you'll notice two things:

    1. You don't get to choose the exact model. For e.g if you pick 600W bronze PSU there's no telling what you will receive in your build. It might be something generic…

    2. The upgrade options are signicantly pricier than if you were to pick your own equivalent part. E.g a 24" monitor is $209 [down to $167 with 20% code] extra to the final bill, but 1080p displays can be as cheap as $170 dollars [$136 with 20% code]. They could sell you the cheapest model they have and then pocket the difference.

Also, the GTX 1060 is the equivalent of the GTX 970, but roughly 15%~20% faster.

If you are buying a GTX 970 and it costs more than the GTX 1060, you are getting ripped off.

In any case, Haswell processors are old now and MSY don't stock any Haswell i7's anymore, so to make a fair comparison between PC Byte ebay and MSY, you need to find a Skylake build.

GTX 1060 is faster than GTX 980. By a small margin. Don't bother with any system tying to hock you a 900 card.

    • If OP's budget is $1200, I wouldn't recommend a 9XX series card. 1060s can now be found for $400ish and RX480s for slightly less than that, and both punch around the 980

  • If you're not interesting in building it yourself, check out PcCaseGear. They built a large range of machines at different price points. We've got two of them in our family, and they've been rock solid.

    • Yeah I think I may get one of these as they list the actual brands they use. I'm taking the list of components to MSY to see if they can offer better but otherwise it's PC Case Gear for me

  • Just buy from MSY. Get people to look at the parts list before you bite the bullet. I think it's a $70 to build, boot, test, and IIRC, they include some limited warranty

Hi mate if you can add $234 then you can get the following
    Intel I5 6500 - PCcasegear $279
    16gb ddr4 2133 mhz Ripjaws V - PCcasegear $89
    1tb WD Blue 7200rpm HDD - PCcasegear $69
    ASRock Fatal1ty H170 Performance Motherboard - PCcasegear $159
    Corsair spec 03 case - PCcasegear - PCcasegear $85
Antec High Current Gamer 520W Modular HCG-520M - PCcasegear $115
    $41 delivery from PCcasegear
EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0 - Newegg $605 delivered

    Total = 1442

    While 16gb ram isn't necessary it's cheap at $89 instead of $55 for 8gb.
The GPU is EVGA which has international warranty so no need to worry about that.

For gaming an I7 isn't really needed id rather a GTX 1070 over an I7 cpu anyday considering how much longer it will play games at an acceptable level compared to an old GTX 970

you could also save nother $100 or so off this by changeing Motherboard to a cheaper $100 motherboard and also changing ram to 8gb if your budget is very tight.

    • If he were to go and upgrade his PSU (which might be wise, considering Generic ones can be bad)… his total will come back up to $1,200.
He can add another 8GB's for cheap. But overall, his total will end up costing between $1200-1300.

So it is definitely worth is getting your setup instead for an extra $250 (its future proof).
Not to forget that neither option provides the OS, so that is an added cost (<$130).

      BUT !!
I do think the OP has a point with some of these pre-built PC's.
      Especially with the 20% discount.
I think he should look at one without a GPU that is cheaper… then tack on a GTX 1080/70/60.

Hmmm, I'll look into it as well

If you were in bris then I'd say come over to my place and take your pick out of 3 gaming cases (with PSUs) that I have sitting in my study. Free.

They are older cases but extra fans and ports etc.

The prebuilt one you have there isn't too bad, but considering the shitty PSU and case, and most likely cheap-as-chips RAM and motherboard, it's not particularly worthwhile. Also consider the lack of Windows, so that'd be an extra ~$150.

I'd probably consider PC Case Gear's $1299 prebuilt a better deal than this. It has a worse GPU but decent everything else, and since it's easier to upgrade a GPU than everything else, I think this is the way to go. You could always just take it out and sell it, or see if they'll budge on it.

  • I've upped my budget so I can have a GTX 1060/70/80 rather than 900 and am looking at this one https://www.pccasegear.com/products/36393/pccg-nanoxia-1060-… $1649 + 44 postage

But I'm going into MSY and seeing if they can do something comparable with legit brands as I'd prefer local rather than postage.

Thanks so much for your help everyone.
