Underfloor Insulation - Recommendations

Hi

I've got a house on poles in rural Melbourne, only 6 years old with good insulation in the walls & ceiling
Just the underfloor appears to be lacking, has just thin foil between all the joists under the house
Floor is floating floorboards on particle board and always feels cold in the winter

There seems to be mixed opinions whether underfloor insulation really pays off given they claim only 12% of heat is lost through the floor

I was looking at Earthwool & Greenstuf underfloor insulation
Greenstuf is currently 20% off at Masters, about $80 for 15 sqm

Earthwool underfloor isn't cheap but some companies sell their wall insulation instead:

Let me know your thoughts,

Is it worth insulating?
Is Earthwool wall batts suitable?
Or should I give Greenstuf a try?

Joists are evenly spaced at 400mm so I assume 430mm batt's would fit nice and snug
Will do the job myself, looks pretty straight forward stapling it in place with tape & maybe reusing the foil

In a termite area so want to ensure I'm not making my house more at risk,

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

  • Got underfloor done together with ceiling.
As my house was on slight slope couldnt get underfloor under quarter of the house.
That area is definitely cooler than the rest of the house.
    I would go for it.

With termites you might want to consider would you still see them when some of the wood is covered?
Would they like that warmer environment?

    • Cheers, should be alright because they won't eat particle boards (too much glue) and the joists are ply to resist termites
Which brand / type of insulation did you go for?

  • This is something I would be interested in doing… First winter in this house and I feel like we are losing a lot of heat through the floor. Just the board. Pretty good access under the house, also a slope block, unfortunately the part of the house with the lowest area is the part of the house I most want to keep warmer.
Also a termite area, so I want to be very careful with any changes, doing my best to distract and not attract termites.

  • Looping back to this one. Helpful insights from everyone. We've recently got a heater installed, but still feels cold on the floor level. Seems like most cold comes from the crawl space underneath. Did people have underfloor insulation installed in the end? If so, what brand and price? Also wondered for those who have them installed, did it make a noticeable difference in walking on / sitting in the home office on the floor boards? Cheers.

    • How was your heater installed? Because it'd make a big difference too.
