RX 480 Vs GTX 1060 Also, When Is a Good Time to Buy?

Hey everyone,

Tossing up between RX 480 and GTX 1060, leaning towards rx 480 however, due to the huge demand the prices are inflated a bit.

What should I go with? I have an i5 6400 and 8GB ram, and am interested in future proofing.
The games I play aren't too demanding however, due to VR becoming increasingly accessible I figured why not.

Should I wait it out a bit longer or just go ahead and purchase one and if so, which.

Thanks

    Team Green FTW!

  • It totally depends on the games your playing now and which one is cheaper. If you're mostly playing Dx11 games, dx12 won't be widely used for quite a bit, so you won't suffer with the 1060 purchase ( which, does comparably well in Dx12 games)

So, when it comes to what to buy, go with which ever one is cheaper!

However, if you've been waiting for Aftermarket 480s and don't mind a wait till possibly September, it would be worthwhile

TL:DR Buy what's in stock and what's cheaper. Feel free to wait if it's not urgent

    To sum up

GTX 1060 is faster than RX 480 in DX11 games by an average of 11 percent. It seems to perform better using OpenGL API.

RX 480 is faster than GTX 1060 in DX12 games by an average of 5 percent. It also seems to perform better with Vulkan API (Doom, noticeably)

RX 480 supports Crossfire and FreeSync
GTX 1060 does not support Sli and uses G-Sync

Freesync monitors are cheaper (as low as $170 dollars)

G-sync monitors are more expensive. (cheapest is $450 dollars)

  • Right now, Amazon UK is a decent choice with the current exchange rate. They seem to have stock of the popular models or restocking this weekend, the EVGA 1060 Mini and Sapphire RX480 Nitro work out to be $370 and $335 with shipping respectively, post-VAT (less, if you pay in GBP with a card like 28 Degrees). Both are well below Aussie RRP, otherwise if you're prepared to wait 1-2 months, prices will equalise and you can maybe find one on sale at below international RRP.

PS: as for green v red, depends on your games, rig/monitor set-up, colour preference, etc. Both cards are good picks.

  • I think if you wait for the end of the year or early next year, eBay might have another 20% off selected retailers. imo thats the time to pounce. Also gives the price of the 10 series to drop to normal supply levels (not new hype levels)
