lol iphone 3gs and iphone 4 were from 2010 … so this would have been huge hit back then just for its screen size.. ;)

  • Are they seriously selling a 2 year old phone with Lollipop?

This is essentially the original Moto G with 512MB more ram.

    • +1

i would rather the moto g 3rd gen .. to be honest :)

      • No NFC for moto g i think, means no android pay

        • fair enough if you need NFC :) just personal preference i dont use NFC much and just saying at this price point… i tend to prefer flagship androids .. :)

        • +2

@scud70: Agree, got used with NFC payments for while (using since 1 year with commonwealth bank) and looking for mini phone with nfc, which is hard to find at this price and local stock :)

        • +2

@hopper: You could have got a Sony C5 Ultra for cheaper than this, with NFC.

        • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: As stated above i was looking for a mini size phone for single handed use :)
using S6 edge i can say its hard to use in one hand with curved screen, being a former nexus 4 users, looking for a smaller device for daily use

        • +1

@hopper: Sorry, then you could have got an M4 Aqua for even cheaper? ie <$200

        • +4

          @hopper:

All of the following are small phones for less cost than this deal with a subpar 1.5gb of RAM:

          4.7" HTC One M7 2gb/32gb
          5.0" Redmi 3s 3gb/32gb or 2gb/16gb

A bit pricier but a lot more phone:

          4.6" Sony Z3 compact 2gb/16gb
          4.6" Sony Z5 compact 2gb/32gb

The Redmi 3s is 139.4mm tall, small for a 5".

For NFC I was looking at the Amazon UK 5.2" Honor 5c which was ~$260 landed.

        • +1

@Cheaparoo: Thx looking into sony compact series now :)

        • +1

@Cheaparoo: Sony Z5 compact for less than $249? Could you provide a link please?

        • +1

@Cheaparoo: The Z5C is still at least $500.

        • @Tiggrrrrr: just dropped idea after reading comments on z5 compact, not a good idea i guess. It's was 399 in previous deal

        • @hopper: Edit to above, if you are App heavy, I'd probably not recommend the M4.

        • @Tiggrrrrr: thx, I managed using nexus 4 8GB for 1 year (used till June 2016)

        • band 28 support can be a need for some, I know my S5 had nextG / band 28.

        • -1

@garage sale: thats why i went the s5 and local stock, babd 28 is a big thing where i live.

sure i could have bought 2 china droids but the features in an s5 cant be found with a china droid.

Be aware that Samsung does not prioritise OS updates for their Mini versions.

My wife's S4 Mini came with Kit Kat, and Samsung have advised that they will not be releasing any updates beyond Kit Kat.

    Won't buy another Samsung phone.

    • +1

Genuinely curious - how has this impacted your use of the phone? Are you unable to use some apps or are you missing certain essential features? Are you concerned about security?

      • +7

I'm mostly concerned about security. Kit Kat is a two year old OS with significant vulnerabilities that remain identified but unpatched in early versions. Granted, many vulnerability updates reside in apps provisioned by Google, such as Google Play services, and I think that's a great way to go (after all, Google can't force older devices to run newer versions of Android even if it could persuade OEMs to release OS updates), but Samsung's EOL policy for such recent architecture (less than 2 years old) is baffling.

Of course, Samsung can do what it likes with the phones it sells. But with so many alternatives on the market that are regularly updated (e.g. Nexus), why opt for a clearly unsecured phone?

        • Mine came with Kit Kat and updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 immediately.
Samsung have also announced they will release Marshmallow update in the coming weeks (do a google there's plenty of info on it).

        • My regular S5 says version 5.0 which is lollipop. Should there be an update?

        • +1

          @cashie:
Are you talking about S4 Mini or S5 Mini?

        • +1

          @cashie:

Samsung have also announced they will release Marshmallow update in the coming weeks (do a google there's plenty of info on it).

I cannot find any such information. Can you post a link? Samsung state that the latest OS version for S4 Mini is 4.4.2 Kitkat.

        • +1

          @ozhunter68:
Oops, I was talking about the S5 mini that this thread is about, sorry missing that blitz was talking about the S4 mini

        • +1

          @davelarz:

I updated to marshmallow on my regular S5 a few weeks ago. From memory I think I did the update from settings -> system -> about phone.

        • +1

yes some S5 have received android 6 marshmallow, Australian ones seem slow to receive my grey import is on marshmallow

        • +1

          @cashie:
No probs. Thanks for clarifying. Often the devil is in the detail :-)

        • Is marshmallow update worthwhile or does it slow things down?

    • +9

Samsung makes good phones. That statement is true — for their main flagship devices.

Pretty much ALL of their mid-end offerings are all 'traps' — all very mediocre phones, low end hardware with a too-high price tag and their software support is non-existent a year after release.

      • +7

Unfortunately I've seen apps not get along well with anything 4.x.x - for any hardware left at 4.x.x you're probably looking at something 3rd party to get up to speed.

That's not a terrible thing on an older device but on something people are asking $250 for today???

        Err no.

      • This parrallels with sennheiser headphones and Im sure many other brands. You are paying for the brand. Do your research people!!

      • What specifics reason Samsung to make good phones?

    • Mine came with Kit Kat and updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 immediately.
Samsung have also announced they will release Marshmallow update in the coming weeks (do a google there's plenty of info on it).

  • jesus, you guys arent kidding. Its past its 2nd birthday and true to form, Samsung messed up their update to 5.1.1

yeah nah, better off with a motorola, bad camera and all

    • +1

yeah nah, better off with a motorola, bad camera and all

      Excuse you?

  • I bought one on the Mobileciti $275 deal last week, I think it was a bargain then and I think it is a top little phone for the money.
    Even better with this deal.

  • +7

i wouldn't even advertise this junk phone on here for that price. you'd be silly not to grab the $198 redmi note 3 pro that i saw on here the other day, over this.

    • +1

yep , i feel good because thats what idid . lol

    • +4

Well, its perfect for use during the 3-4 weeks wait for the Redmi, then you can easily return it.

    • +4

The S5 Mini and Redmi Note 3 Pro are completely different, and people who want a "mini" phone probably want something smaller than the Note 3 Pro, which is in no way a compact phone like the S5 Mini.

The Redmi's also some weird iOS looking Android version, which might not be to everyones liking.

    • +4

You would be silly unless you want a compact, water resistant phone with NFC. I still want to use my phone with one hand and don't want to upgrade the size of my pocket.

    • -1

redmi has no band 28 support…….

  • +1

(60 Day Satisfaction Guarantee) from ALDI is great!
I doubt Samsung can guarantee the satisfaction on mid end phones.

  • +1

To be fair, this is actually a fairly decent phone for the price, considering it is also water resistant. My wife has one and she loves it. Even if it no longer gets upgrades, it can still do everything she needs it for, and more. I think being a smaller screen makes it generally more appealing to women as well.

    • My wife likes them smaller also, it fits better in her hand.

      • +3

Is that why she married you?

  • +3

I paid $300 for this 2 years ago. I've never had issues with the phone -apart from it not running Pokemon Go (but that's probably a good thing)

  • +2

seems to be a decent deal if your after a samsung, i recall telstra selling these for around the same price not long ago and people did buy them, at first i was looking for one but after the cost of the unlock code it wasnt a good deal for me so i passed but now for others it might be decent.

also remember that not many people buy mobiles online and the big big bonus with this is the 60 return policy.

i purchased a brand new s5 not long ago from jbhifi and for what i wanted in an handset it ticked all the boxes, decent price as well seeing as they have jumped back up to the original selling price now.

    removable battery
    band 28
    msd card
    infared transmitter
    good quality camera
    2 year warranty

  • +1

If you want the version with band 28 make sure the model number on the box is SM-G800Y.

  • some phones you could get for a fraction of that price include: Asus Pegasus with 3gb RAM? , Lenovo phones from Tinydeal. some Asus Zenfones are going for under that price too. with so much more choice and variety especially names such as Xiaomi and Meizu phones on the Chinese market, I wouldn't even be tempted to go buy this mini 'Samsung. BTW It took THAT LONG for the price to 'drop'??? I knew the big phone companies were overpricing consumers. LOL

    • Chinese phones usually don't have band 28……

  • Great deal for a FREE backup mobile phone for 59DAYS!

  • +3

I have to say, the S5 is crap. For it's time, it had a good camera but the LAG! It's out of this world. Way too painful to use right out of the box. You shouldn't have to root a phone to have a pleasant experience.

    • +1

The lag is most likely from the TouchWiz UI which has always been a dog. This is why I stick with the Nexus, for the simple & clean version of Android.

  • +1

Just updated a Telstra S5 from Lollipop to Marshmallow and have noticed it's much slower, especially when searching for a contact. Still happy with it.

    • I updated mine too and am not noticing any difference in speed.

  • Seems like an ok phone selling locally for the price. If you compare it against other local phones for around $250 it offers a few features that can't be found in other phones for this price.

  • +2

Crap phone. You're better off picking up a refurb Xperia Z3 Compact for the same price. Now that's an amazing compact phone!

    • Do you have a link or can you tell us where to buy it from?

      • -1

        From here

I used to have one and even now, holds up amazingly well.

        • It's a shame the battery isn't removable.

        • So $260 gets you a used one. What happened to 'refurb Z3C for the same price'? :)

And 'refurb' is kinda meaningless unless it's from the Sony store or something. Fairer comparison would be to "new" ones, which appear to start at $333 grey market.

        • @Jabba the Hutt:

          Having used both the S5 Mini and the z3c, I'd prefer a used z3c over a new S5 mini. Compared to the stock S5, it's a P.O.S

    • +1

I had a Z3C before my S5… I wasn't impressed by the voice call quality and the headphone jack was very iffy (particularly as the handset was getting older). Also, headset volume is not the greatest (known issue with firmware, Sony doesn't care). It also dropped signal where my old Nexus 4 still had a bar or two - that said, even my S5 drops the signal on occasion.

I wish they would release an updated Nexus 4…

      • +2

        +1 need a updated nexus 4 (4.7")

        • I like my LG G2, but still use my over 2 year old nexus 4 sometimes and still going strong.

  • I was late by couple hours, it is sold out everywhere!!

  • It is quite the coincidence, but these handsets have suddenly appeared all over Gumtree.

    Gumtree grubs.

  • Hey everyone. I spotted about 6 of these at the NEW Aldi store in Fairfield at Fairfield Forum in NSW if anybody needs one. Good luck.
