A great deal for a new i3. Have not been able to find a 14" any cheaper in the marketplace right now.
Of course, its not a SSD, and the display is not super-duper, but for this price point…
RAM can be expanded and HDD can be swapped before buying.

  • Have not been able to find a 14" any cheaper in the marketplace right now.

Whilst this is probably accurate it is still so hard finding any good bargains on laptops these days.

    I am on Acer 2117u 14" 500gb/4gb/HD, I paid $299 for it, plus $40 for a 60gb ssd I self installed.

There is zero incentive for me to pay $500 for a new i3.

Sorry Shazam but it's not a great deal. I am neither positive or negging your deal tho.

    • Well, anything i3 I have looked at is 600++, inc. the chunky 15.6" which I detest.
I suppose its a good compromise for those who need more grunt than the Celeron/Pentium machines, and not too heavy to lug about but still at an affordable price point.

It's lucky that u paid $299 for yours. If there's one at that price and specs nowadays I'll buy it without question.

  • Forgive my ignorance, but how can one tell whether a HDD-only equipped laptop they are buying can, if at all, be installed with a SSD from an aftermarket supplier?

HDD are always in the 2.5" SATA format these days which means a 2.5" SSD is compatible, it's a matter of the difficulty of the swap. Generally, look for laptops with panels on the base that allow access, or Google for tutorials.

Lenovo can also upgrade it for u b4 you purchase the laptop. $100 to change to 128GB SSD.

  • They also have i3 6100 for $50 more.

  • Tempting, but these look so… 1990s in styling to me anyway.

    • Functional. Tick.
      Affordable. Tick.
      Stylish. Not a chance.

But then I cant really justify spending 1K+ for those uber stylish ultrabooks…

I personally really like the unpretentious utilitarian styling. A bit like the LandCruiser 70.

For purely uni purposes, I WISH Lenovo did a 13" IdeaPad. Ie, IdeaPad 100S with bigger screen and double the ram for around $399. 11" is too small and a soldered 2gb a tad concerning, even for internet (albeit with multiple tabs) and word processing tasks.

  • this is an old gen i3, and this price isnt anything new, its been at this price for a long time
