You can sit them both down and have an open discussion about your needs. Hopefully they'll play along after that. Open communication is key in modern day relationships.

On a more serious note, try getting a more powerful router from one of the ebay sales.

On more serious note here are a few of things to try:

Reboot your iPhone by pressing power and home key at same time til the screen goes off and on again with the apple symbol in middle. Also reboot your home modem.

Update your iOS to 9.3.3 or 9.3.4. I found some of the earlier versions of iOS 9 had trouble reconnecting to wifi when waking from sleep resulting in slow internet performance.

Go to wifi settings, choose forget your home wifi network then reconnect again with password.

Update your home wifi modem firmware if required.
