LG Google Nexus 5X H791 (16GB, Black) - $305.60 @ Dick Smith / Kogan eBay

160
C20DS

We all know this phone, its the H791 model (international with band 28)

Pricing is lower than less reputable overseas sellers (is dicksmith still reputable under new ownership?)

I went from a Nexus 5, to a Huawei P8, and now going back to a Nexus 5X due to the vanilla software.

I mean, I'm writing this on my Nexus 5 and that phone is still going strong for me, this one is pretty similarly spec'd if memory serves, if so, even though my phone's still kicking ass, I'd recommend springing for the 6P or waiting for this year's Nexus.

Solid deal but I'm still disappointed that the 5X I got from DWI yesterday is dead and bricked already after 6 hours… Completely irrelevant but I need some sort of rage outlet

    • +1

experienced the same with DWI N5x stock! bricked after 2 weeks+ on normal use! never again buying from DWI & with their horrible warranty policy & response!!

      • Sent them a message this morning and got a reply tonight - hopefully its not too much hassle from here. Really just want a refund because the 5X was meant to just be a back up phone while my G4 is out for repair…

        • +1

They will not refund, just repair. I have asked the same.

        • @r0xz: Yep alright they're useless - they want me to restart the phone to see if that fixes it (yeah alright, maybe if I could get it to turn on to begin with mate) and then send a video… I assume of me pressing the on button and nothing happening?

        • @Cooties: just send a 30 sec video of yourself trying hard to press the ON button. l0l~ I did it last time just to satisfy them, otherwise they won't initiate the return process! it was the most stupid thing I had ever done in life to get a warranty. -__-

  • Great price, and highly underrated phone.

is dicksmith still reputable under new ownership?

    Nope.

Got the 32gb version from these guys in the previous sale, phone stopped working after the 3 weeks so I used the warranty claim. Phone got sent back to HK and I didn't hear from them for 2 weeks until I emailed them what went wrong. They say it can't be repaired and suggested a replacement however I sought a full refund which they thankfully did. Well I guess that is what happens when you buy grey market stock, be aware from buying overseas stock guys, I suggest you buy Australian stock as it is much more reliable and trustworthy.

same thing happened to me with DWI but they "replaced" the mobo instead of refunding/exchanging a new unit and I have to wait for more than a month for it to get returned. shitty phone & shitty seller. better off with local warranty!

    • Do you think? Bought LG G4 last November from JBHiFi.
Bluetooth+WIFI died late January. Replaced same day (though I had to go to another store due to no stock) because is under 90 days.
Then it happened again in July. 5 weeks. FIVE FREAKIN' WEEKS. And still not repaired. Sent to a very dodgy mob with a horrible reputation on Google reviews. So I expect dramas even when I do eventually get it back.

When you drop your phone off at JB Hi Fi for repair they make you sign waivers that say that it may take 6-8 weeks. Otherwise they won't touch it. So much for local stock and local warranty!

      • I recently upgraded my new Nexus 5x to the 6P in the recent Mobileciti sale, the 5x worked great for me for about 6 weeks until the upgrade so I had no problems with the Aus stock. I'm sorry to hear your situation, hope it gets sorted out soon. :)
Have you considered going Nexus? They are very reliable IMO, just don't buy overseas stock!

        • +1

I'd consider a 6P maybe. Not another LG.

jb is shafting you. under australian consumer law, you should be able to get an immediate replacement, let alone fast repair.

        • Only if THEY or the manufacturer deem it a major fault. Which they won't.

Consumer law is surprisingly week. I know plenty of people who've waited weeks for a phone repair unfortunately.

          Consumer law is surprisingly week.

ACL isn't weak, however, you need to have it enforced. In Victoria, VCAT is where you'd go.

        • @AlexF:

I've had dealings with the NSW counterpart - Fair Trading NSW and also with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. Months of back and forth and BS and if you're lucky you'll get some partial compensation that won't even be worth the many hours of emails and phonecalls.

        • @syousef: not really, according to consumerlaw.gov.au, goods that are sold MUST be of a reasonable quality, ie in working order for a reasonable amount of time. consumer law these days is stronger than it used to be, back when we only had the trade practices act from 1974. it's important to know your rights as a consumer.

did you pay by credit card? you could potentially threaten jb with a charge back if they don't help you quick smart. and you could always "encourage" jb by posting this on whirlpool forums or on productreview.com.au… nothing like a bit of shaming.

        • I've had dealings with the NSW counterpart - Fair Trading NSW and also with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

No, VCAT isn't an advocacy government department (aka. Consumer Affairs Victoria) or industry representative - it's a tribunal that hears both parties and produces a legal order enforceble by a sharif.
Google says NSW equivalent is NCAT.
In the end, if you don't defend your legal rights, don't expect anyone else to respect them.

        • @AlexF:

It's a Pyrrhic victory if you spend four times as much money defending them as you did on the product.

In any case as with Fair Trading I'm sure it takes time to look into and resolve issues. By which time I expect the repair will be complete and the whole thing dismissed.

        • you spend four times as much money defending them as you did on the product.

Nonsense - in Victoria, hearing should cost ~$60 - VCAT Fee Structure.
However, if you can't be bothered, then, yeah, keep on keeping on.

        • @AlexF:

First I'm in NSW…but yeah and who's going to pay for my time off work? And at what rate do I get compensated for my time filling in forms, writing emails and on phone calls?

My aim is not to get shafted more. If I don't have a phone in a couple more weeks it'll be a different matter.

      • +1

they make you sign waivers that say that it may take 6-8 weeks

I can't believe they are doing that - it's got to be illegal. They can't make a consumer sign away their statutory rights (the ACL.)
It should not take more than a few weeks to repair a (5 month old medium/high-end) phone.
Demand an immediate refund or replacement - be nice but be firm.

    • That's in fact a pretty good outcome, stuhtb. If you bought an Australian stock phone it would be sent back to LG - maybe a week quicker, maybe not, and you got a refund no problems. I agree Aussie stock is the way to go if you get a good price, but an Aussie 5x costs $500+. Looks like DS is much better than DWI, and like you r0xz, DWI only gave me a "new" motherboard, which was in fact secondhand with a fake IMEI and crap reception. Took months of toing and froing to HK and it was still crap.

      • Yes, tbh KoganDick have always (so far) provided me with good customer service regardless of how bad their products turn out to be. I recently purchased a power bank which was not giving out the charge it had claimed it will so I emailed them and they sent me a replacement, and I even got to keep the old one!

The problem is that people don't have the time to go through this process as it causes inconvenience and delays, however if price is the main factor stopping them from purchasing Aus Stock then I think it is not worth it and just spend a little extra for that peace of mind for warranty and repairs. However as seen in @syousef case, it's not guaranteed that the product s will be flawless although majority of the time problems are resolved in a reasonable time.

        • Agree totally with spending a "little extra" for Aus stock and warranty, but $200 extra? Sounds like you got quicker, better service than if you'd bought Aus stock through JB. I wouldn't touch DWI again, but if KoganDick have a half decent warranty at a big discount … think I'll jump in the grey pool again.

Tomorrow is 5 weeks without my LG G4 (dropped in for repair at JBHiFi) after WIFI and Bluetooth died a second time on a fresh unit after a few months. Never LG again!

    • +2

Sadly I'm joining in on that boat - my LG Nexus 4 has outlived my LG G4 (11months) and X5 (6 whole hours)… no quality control lately it seems

      • 6 hours could normally be explained by the bathtub curve if you were unlucky but that doesn't explain the huge number of LG G4 that bootloop nor WIFI and BT module issues. Not to mention other phones with high rate of failure.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve

      • Still using my N4 (works great with Resurrection Remix/Marshmallow.)

  • Thanks op. Got one
