Citibank Debit Card in Malaysia

Hi,

I was recently in Malaysia and tried to withdraw cash on my Citibank Debt Card at a ATM in a 7/11. I tried savings & credit and neither worked.

So I went to the Citibank branch in KL and withdrew cash there instead. I pressed the Credit button (which is how I thought I needed to withdraw cash from overseas) and it took the cash from my Ready Credit account rather than the transaction account which gave me a crappy exchange and fee.

I am going back soon. Should I be able to use ATM's in 7/11's? Do I need to press credit or savings at the 7/11's?

Thanks!

You should be using the savings account, otherwise it's a cash advance on the credit aspect of the Visa card.

Did you try any ATMs of the banks there? If not why not?

Also I hope you notified Citibank of your destinations so they don't block the card for "suspicious" transactions.

    • Nah I didn't try the bank ATM's. Where I was staying only had 7/11's in the immediate vicinity.

I thought I wouldn't be able to use the savings button since it needs to go via visa?

Yes I notified citibank and my other banks.

I'll try Maybank or one of the other big ones next time.

      Thanks

      • It's a dual purpose card, it accesses both your savings account and also is a CC. Access to your savings account doesn't go through Visa but is simply a foreign transaction mediated by the foreign bank and Citibank.

  • You need to use savings.

As I found out recently, Malaysia does not charge any ATM fees! Therefore you can withdrawal cash at any Malaysian ATM, e.g. HSBC, Maybank, etc. with your Citibank Plus without fees.

  • Came back from Malaysia recently and used Maybank to withdraw from Citibank Debit. Pressed Savings.

I remember they had an ATM fee but was very small amount like 2RM? Rates weren't to bad at 2.97/2.98

    • Thanks, I remember seeing Maybank not too far from my hotel so I will go there instead of the 7/11.

A few years ago I definitely used the 'credit' option. Can't remember which bank it was, but was an ATM in the LCCT airport arrivals area.

  • I just used savings when I was over there as well as Hong Kong, Singapore etc last year with no issues at all. I used a huge range of different banks atm.
