  • 12 month contract. More value with the optus $40 deal, unlimited calls with 10gb.

    • +28

But Telstra coverage > Optus coverage.

      • +6

I go rural alot. Im used to telstra shafting. This deal is a big step for telstra

    • +12

@TRENT86 — suggest making clear that it's a 12-month minimum contract, and that it's a special Mx offer (not the normal M plan) where you only get customer service by online chat or self-service.

According to the offer, as well as buying online, if you need assistance afterwards (ie during your contract) you can't call customer service or get help at a Telstra Shop.

      • +3

From past experience with online help, it's been fast and better than instore, or on the phone.

        • +1

Heh, tbh I agree with you! I use it mostly so I have a record of what's been said/advised.

However, having no access to phone or in-store customer service is an important detail, and quite different from what some people expect from a tier 1 carrier. There should be at least some reference to it in the original post.

    • how come with 10gb? i just sign with optus, only 8gb. but it's enough for me though, plus 1 season free epl subscription

  • +14

Going into a contract atm for any plan is crazy. The prices are dropping and data increasing on a monthly basis.

    • +1

I agree, but at least it's only 12 months which is a lot more palatable. I think some people have had luck migrating to newer plans to by committing to new contracts. Without device repayments that's a bit cleaner.

  • +2

Good data boost. Was wondering what their response to the recent Aldi deal was going to be. Was definitely in the Aldi camp, but this gives me something to think about

    • -3

Sorry but I don't see how the major telco needed to respond to an mvno… Aldi is a reseller, whereas Telstra takes the risk on infrastructure etc

  • +7

    Optus 4G vs Telstra 4G
No contract vs 12 month contract
    Unlimited vs Unlimited (practically)
    $35 vs $40
    8GB vs 7GB

It's as close as possible to competing I've seen Telstra.
If I saw this deal 2 months ago, I probably would've bit the bullet.
Both networks are equals in terms of 4G coverage and speeds afaik.
However, Telstra is better in terms of 3G penetration, and wider reception for voice.

    • +13

$1000 worth of calls at $1/min is only 32min/day average over a month. No where near "unlimited (practically)".

      • +3

        +1
        You're right.

I was assuming it was the standard 60c/min rate with no flagfall. Which would equate to ~1,666 minutes.
Or ~56mins a day. Which is quite above the norm for personal use.

Regardless, it's still a good deal imho.

    • Where do you get 8gb for $35pm no contract?

    • +4

Telstra destroys Optus anywhere that isn't a main city

      • Unfortunately Optus is rubbish coverage around here. Had daughter on an Optus plan for a month, she could not call us from approx 10k's away.

    • +1

Optus say their coverage is equal, but in my experience it's nowhere near as good. Very patchy in Sydney metro/nth.

  • -6

LOL Telstra is the worse deal out of the lot. WTF with these $1000 worth of calls. Their network is no longer a premium with all the recent outrages

    • -1

Agree. FTW and all the haters. Optus is much better for service and value for money. You can get an extra 3GB for the same amount of momney.

      • +6

But Optus reception is not even close to Telstra's.

    • -6

Agreed. Telstra charges a premium for shitty network

    • Telstra may have had a couple of outages, though their reception is still second to none, and they will be the first to introduce 5G to Australia, just like they were the first to introduce 4G.

  • Amaysim have a $40 7 gig plan +

    • Unlimited Calls/SMS.

    • Unlimited calls to 10 countries / Unlimited texts to 32 countries.

    • No contract.

    • With amaysim now and when people call me they sometimes get "this line is busy" even though im not on the phone. if u can handle that, go for it. It annoys me bad!

    • Isn't that $39.90 for 28 days? So $43.23/month?

  • +10

If you're an existing Telstra customer needing to recontract, try this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/259574#comment-3893182

$50 for 13GB, unlimited national calls and text

    • +3

      And 12mnths Free Apple Music

    • +1

I'll have to give that a go. Looks like a few people had success

  • +5

After all these years Telstra has finally offered something I can go for.

  • +6

Contracts are crap but if you insist.. just buy a $2 Optus SIM.. Bingo you are a new customer

    • +1

Not sure why the neg… but yes, if you're a current Telstra customer, they (probably) won't offer this deal to you.
And in that case, you can just port a service from a $2 SIM card from Optus/Vodafone/or range of MVPs.

      • +1

        I didn't neg

        • +3

          No, you HAD the neg.
          Someone negged YOU.

I +1'd you to bring you back up to scratch ; )

        • +1

          @Kangal: +1 for you too :)

        • @fruit: true love that is..

  • +2

And with NRL digital pass free

  • +1

This deal brings me back to a previous deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221295) which leaves alot here (myself included) a bitter after taste on their incompetent Online team, their off the chops credit and fraud Control team, their powerless off shore Complaints team and the "cant be arsed" retail shops (in my case Pacific Werribee branch). When you bring all these different jokers together, it becomes a perfect nightmare that you wouldnt wish upon your nasty neighbour even if they steal your papers under nose your and their dog pisses on your letterbox on a daily basis.

Good for those who are reliant on their network, imo Optus' and other service providers aint too shabby on their network either. If it has to be Telstra, I rather Aldi.

  • Common on Telstra, 10gb for $50 and I'll happily sign up for 12 months!

Im happy with $1000 ( which equates to 1000 minutes of calls), just need a bit more data then 7gb to sign up to a 12 month contract.

    • Bargain and ask! I mentioned the Optus deal ($40 for 10GB) and they wouldn't match but can offer the Telstra Large BYO ($70 for 10GB) with $20 credit each month, which suits your needs.

  • -1

I am actually on this plan. The service is not that much different comparing to Optus. I used both. I still don't have great reception at redfern. As for quality of reception, I can't say since I live near Sydney so it seemed about the same to me.

Careful if you get into this plan.Receiving international text and calls will cost extra (it doesn't count toward your 1000). Also, Telstra doesnt block those subscriptions services on your mobile. So if you plan on getting into this plan, make sure you contact customer rep to block subscriptions. It also save you 5-10 bucks a month.

That's so far my experience with Telstra. I would actually be happier if I had more data to play with.

    • +2

Pay to receive incoming calls and texts?? Surely not??

  • +1

I am not being critical of op but if someone could please explain how this is better than the $40 telstra recharge where you get 6gb data which rolls over and unlimited calls/text and $350 international credit and you can use the $40 for Adroid app store apps or just sell it for actual money through rebatr - im confused

    • 3gb out of 6gb is bonus night data (offer which is ending on 22nd Aug).

    • Plus you can use that credit to pay Netflix and Google play music.. Yep telstra prepaid still a better option in my book.

    • MX
      +7gb data
      +$1000 phone calls ($1/min)
      +new phone feeling (? - in CIS)
      +No management overhead
      -No in-person support

      Prepaid
-3/3gb peak/offpeak data (potential expiration this month)
      +Unlimited phone calls
      +$350 international credit
      +Funny money/credit for other services/creditme2u
-Management overhead (though largely mitigated with auto topup)
      +Data rollover

In my opinion, telco's place 'value' into their plans based on data inclusions. People don't value (Australian based) voice inclusions as much, so if you take that out you've essentially got more data VS funny money credit. My wife uses her phone very little for voice calls, and 3gb data is sufficient so she is on prepaid and her credit pays for the ipad data for essentially $0.

  • Optus is the worst company I ever dealt with in my life . Plus the network is ok and plans are not as cost effective as Vodafone . I am amazed by the services Vodafone offers at their small outlets whereas the optus guys don't even bother to look at you when you enter theirs . Telstra costs a bit more because they provide better coverage and that is true . I live at Epping and don't travel too far for work so Vodafone ticks the marks - Myself and my wife pay 80$ and we get 10 gb data shared , unlimited calls texts mms in Australia and also to 10 countries internationally which includes Singapore and US too by the way - ironically Optus even after being a Singtel
Group company doesn't offer free calls to Singapore !

    • +1

      thats just sad lol…

    • What plan are you on that you share 10gb? I'm on 40/month and I get 500mb

  • Any comments on Boost mobile?

    • +1

I like Boost. I get identical coverage to people with Telstra as far as I can tell - by anecdote only, any time we're in a dodgy sort of area it's the people on Optus and Vodafone who die off first while Telstra and Boost devices stay connected to the same degree.

My favourite part is no contracts. I refuse to go in to long contracts again, not when data costs are dropping so rapidly.

I'm currently on the $50/month plan… 7GB of data + 1GB bonus each weekend (per KB billing, 11GB total if you manage to squeeze every drop out of it), unlimited calls + text, few other goodies like unlimited international calls to an assortment of countries which I don't use because the few people I know overseas I correspond with via email.

      Downside: 28 day expiry

      Upside: Prepaid, abandon ship whenever

Thanks OP, after seeing this managed to get a great deal from Telstra.

Last year I signed up to the post paid 7gb for $50 a month with $200 welcome credit. I had three months left on my post paid contract so contacted Telstra by webchat and stated I wanted to find out how much it would cost if I ported my number to Optus.

After explaining the reasons why of the $40 Optus deal, they told me they could match the 10GB of data and with a monthly credit of $10.00 bringing the total price to $30.00 a month.

Personally think that is great value.

    • Nice work ;) asking to port to Optus and they start sweating bullets "take the data! Take it"

    • You got some bargaining skills. I tried to do the same after reading your post..they wouldn't move at all from normal $40 for 7GB to match Optus $40 ($36 as I'm a student) for 10GB.

They offered me the large BYO $70 for 10GB with $20 credit but not what I needed.

      • The guy I was dealing with was based in Manila. Unsure if that makes any difference?

  • +1

Why not Aldi mobile? Runs on Telstra 4GX
It's $35 a month no contracts and unlimited calls SMS mms
8gb of data with Rollover (starts17thAug) I'm not locking into a contract .. who knows what's going to happen in 4months

    • +3

Aldi's coverage is not same as Telstra

    • Do you have more details on this $35 plan? The current XL $35/month is only 5Gb a month, no rollover.

  • why show up now?? :(

    i got 15gb for $50 on voda, but i want telstra…

  • +1

I just switched to the Telstra BYO 12 month plan last week and they were happy to incorporate the 2 additional GBs per month at no additional charge ($40 p/m for 12 months). So just go on the chat if you signed up recently and try your luck!

Thanks OP, saw this which prompted me to contact Telstra!

    • NP :)

  • awesome..just joined up.

  • +1

I had an existing contract with Telstra that was about to expire and they allowed me to switch to the Mx plan. So don't worry if you have an existing contract.

  • +1

I was told to wait by my Telstra person, new plans coming out next month are
meant to be really competitive. Better then what is currently offered for BYO.

    • Seems prepaid might be what they are referring for to not byo

  • +1

My current contract ended in November 2016, got on live chat and managed to get mine and the mrs phones changed to the mx plan

  • Good Deal, but would Prefer Unlimited Calls in Australia to Standard Australian Numbers. I currently have that, on a $30 plan…with no Data…. Have data in a Second Sim in my Phone. Works great. Telsta Sim 1, Optus Sim 2

  • Ends August 31.
