Your Best Car Deal

Curious to hear people's story of their best car deal. Did you buy it off a family member? Someone urgently heading overseas? A friend upgrading their car and offering it at a "trade-in" price? Or just someone who just undervalued their car?

  • the best car deal I've done recently was overpaying (by the powers) for a good rodeo ute from a dealer, then my son saying he wanted a camry and then selling the ute with a 2K profit…. I really thought I was going to big big tear-up,

but yeah, if you've got the right car, any price is a bargain..

I had a friend who worked at a Car Dealership. He told me about a car that was just Traded in, but it didn't have Rego and a valid RWC. Saw the car, drove it, really liked it, bought it with subject to RWC being issued(which i organised my self as I wanted the car to be looked over). All up the Purchase cost me $9,800 with Cost of the car, RWC, Transfer and rego for a year.

At that time the car would have been easily worth $14-15k with all the extras it had.
About 2 years later, 30,000kms added, minus some extras, and with tyres on their way out, i sold the car without some of the extras, with RWC and Rego for $12k.

  • Mitsubishi Evo 9 - Purchased on 27000 km's for $32000. Drove it for 2 years, got it up to 45000 km's. Sold it for $35000. Bought it back for $30 000 at 55000 km's. Sold it again at $33000.00 a year later on 67000 km's. Net result = $5000 positive.

Very easy to break even on cars generally in the second hand market.

    Tips:
1.) Inspect a car that has bad quality photos taken. You'll find in general most people don't call these sellers and they've had the car up on the market for a while.
2.) When you sell, wash the car, take some GOOD photos and put it up for sale. You'll be surprised how easily your car will sell.
3.) ALWAYS buy a car with low km's.

  • I bought a 5 year old Camry in great condition and low km's for $3500. The guy I bought it off was retiring and had sold his business for a fortune. The Camry was taking up the spot where he wanted to put his new boat. He saw I was a struggling student so he said I could pay whatever I could afford. I kept it for about 10 years and it was a great car. So cheap to run and maintain, I think the most I ever spent on it was $300 for a new radiator.
