[SYD] Opal Fares to Change from 5 Sept

I know this has been in the news for a while but the details of the change to opal are finally announced today.

http://www.transportnsw.info/en/transport-status/news/detail…

Changes to Opal benefits:

  • Opal transfer discount will be introduced for every transfer between modes – trains, buses, ferries, light rail – as part of a single journey. The transfer discount will be $2 for adults and $1 for all other Opal card customers.
  • The Weekly Travel Reward will change from free travel to half-price travel after 8 paid journeys each week.

There will be no changes to:

  • Opal card fares until July 2017

  • Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card $2.50 Daily Travel Cap
  • Daily, Weekly and Sunday Travel Caps for other Opal cards
  • Opal 60-minute transfers

So essentially free 3km bus connection to/from trains which is nice. But no more unlimited travel option unless you fork out $15/day or $60/per week which will definitely discourage people from using public transport, especially on weekends. No good.

    • The discount on connection might mean that it'll be cheaper to use 2 modes of transport than 1 for some journeys. (E.g. Instead of taking the train all the way through, get off the train a few stops earlier and continue on by bus.)

      • Theoretically yes, but 3km of bus ride will not get you very far (1 or 2 more train stops at best).

        • Yes, and therefore this is only relevent if your journey is just over a distance threshold.

The $2.50 cap is still available on Sunday.

  • so if you commute 5 days a week from say Campbelltown to City for work 9am to 5pm office job, would it still have big benefit to do opal trips during lunch time? or benefit is so small and dont bother do to lunch time opal trips?

current situation for most people: do 1x lunch time opal trip, so on monday 3x opals, tuesday 3x opals, and 2x on wednesday to reach 8x.

    • Not sure about that, but I calculated mine for dulwich hill to the city and it basically worked out the same as just doing the 10 trips to and from.

It does depend on what the morning and evening trips cost you. If they are more than $4.50-$5 you would probably save a little money

      • thanks that campbeltown is just example but my actual fare is $4.80 one way so yeah save a little only

      ^ Basically this.

I commute in from Picton and have just run a few scenarios. I get a morning Off peak and (mostly) an afternoon peak train. Current Opal running patterns have me paying as low as $23 a week. The new fare structure can take me anywhere from the full $60 cap if I only stick to the same commute pattern each way each day. If I keep my same opal run and commute pattern, I can get my weekly fares down to $48.24. If I then start to add in earlier PM off-peak trains from Tuesday-Friday I can whittle it down to $43.28.

Seeing that I value my cash higher than the time taken to save it, I'll likely keep the same pattern and aim to leave earlier as the week goes on.

  • Won't make a difference to me as I hit my weekly limit every week

  • gee less money to be spent on gadget starts from 5th September 2016! sad day for ozbargainers!

  • I would have to fork out extra $25 per week. Even if do lunch run, it would be extra $18.

  • There is one change they did not mention. The Cashback during transfer. If third leg of journey is shorter when catch train you will get Cashback. This is no longer available..shame on you citirail.
