Good time to buy an iPhone?

Hi,

I've been waiting to get an iPhone, either 16Gb 6 or 6S. I understand the iPhone 7 is only a couple of weeks away but I wasn't going to get anything above $80/m anyway.

iPhone 6 16Gb is 55/m at Virgin.
iPhone 6S 16gb is 61/m at Virgin

..those are the cheapest prices i found currently. So I'm wondering if it's a good time to buy an iPhone or the prices could still be reduced further after the launch?

Thanks

Why do people still buy 16gb iPhones?!

Forget that… they're still offloading some 8GB models around, and people still buy them.
I think at our current stage of evolution in mobile gaming, the minimum storage capacity should be: 16GB + microSD.
And if microSD is unavailable, then just 32GB outright.

However, to get a premium experience, I would expect 64GB storage.
And iPhones are priced at a premium, so getting a 32GB seems like a foolish choice either.
Thanks to some price gouging by Apple… that means the price of an actual iPhone becomes even more dear.

Let's see what the 2016's iPhone 6SS/7 and 2017's iPhone 7/8/SteveJobs Edition brings to the table.

Why not? I don't play games and all photos will go to google right away. For sure I'm not alone. 16gb is plenty for all banking, voip, messaging, productivity apps.

      • Exactly. I always had a 16GB iPhone and rarely ever ran out of space because I'm a developer and I'm always close to my Macbook. I sync pictures and don't store too much audio or movies.

        • But then fill 10GB of that up with the OS and now youve only got 6GB.

I dont even know why theyve continued to make 16GB phones for this long considering upgrading them to 32 as a base would cost them essentially nothing

        • @k-rokfm:

For someone who uses only basic properties of a smart superphone… to me it seems a little foolish to spend that much money on a device designed to use bleeding-edge processing and take and display High Definition photos and videos.

Those people would be equally served with a Nokia N9, RIM Z10, Lumia 540, or even a $99 ZTE slab.

        • @Kangal:

Some of us are developers who keep multiple phones to test web apps on, and also to keep ourselves updates with the OS and ecosystem :)

Besides, like I said, photos and videos are backed up frequently so storage is never an issue.

        • @3zzy:
I don't have an issue with that. But you have to remember that you are the niche.

So they should make a cheaper iPhone with no storage for you.
OR…you have to put up paying extra for storage.
(at the minimum reduce the price of iPhone by $100, but Apple would never do that).

They should make the mainstream storage as 32GB.
It won't be enough storage for taking lots of videos, especially 4K.
That's why 64GB and 128GB storage are necessary, and if need be, there is also 256GB they can offer.

  • The price of older iPhone models on contract (if you can't pay upfront) is likely to drop after the new iPhone is announced. I also think the iPhone SE 64GB is a better deal at Virgin.

Don't compare the "with phone" Virgin plans to the sim only plans, although they call them the same thing they have very different data. The $30 "with phone" has 300MB, but the $30 SIM only has 1.5GB. Given ALDI gives you 500MB for $15, the "with phone" plans make the phone look cheap, but they're just messing with the numbers.

  • If you want the 6 or 6s, I would wait a couple of months. I imagine prices will drop after the 7 is released. On another note, do not buy the 16gb model. You will run out of space very fast given the operating system takes up the majority of that space.

  • Also for the 6s, 12MP ' live' photos and 4k video recording will eat up the 16GB model very quickly.

  • 16GB

  • Price increased since release so a BIG NO from me :)
