Best Headphones for a Budget of ~ $150?

I currently own a pair of ATH-M50x's and they are great, however I find them lacking just a bit of bass for my liking as I generally listen to EDM's and techno. I do use an equaliser to boost the bass however I don't find it sufficient enough. The M50x's perhaps weren't the best option to start with (as they are monitoring headphones) for my genre of music so I am searching for a new pair of cans to to suit my genre of music.

I am willing to fork out $150-180 for a new pair which has a greater bass emphasis however it should not be overpowering (definitely not Beats), any suggestions?

These go on sale quite often & can be had for around ~180AUD…

    • Thanks for the suggestion! I have read reviews about these and heard that an amp might be required? I generally use my mobile phone as the source of music so I'm not sure if I can use these to its full potential?

I have the 80 ohms. They work great with my iPhone (no issue with them being too quiet or etc.). I think the suggestion would be:
Get the 32 ohms if its purely for mobile/iphone listening
Get the 80 ohms if its a combination of both
Get the 250 ohms if its mainly listening via amp

        • Ive been thinking of selling my m50x as well actually. I looked at DT770, but the long cord seems like it would be quite annoying. Not sure if being fussy or not, but i love the m50x swappable cords

        • @flylin: Yeah I wasn't really sure about the 3m cable being really portable. The V-Moda M-100 have been a pair I had wanted but the prices were generally $300+ or grey market stock.

        • Agree – It's probably the only downside to these :( Would be nice if these had swappable cords… I guess their main use is for indoors & not when out and about…

  • Don't use headphones if you want to listen to bass heavy music/songs to the level you're happy with? If this is for mobility reasons, fair enough; obviously you won't be able to lug around your large and heavy stereo system with you everywhere.

    • Yep I intend on using mostly my phone. The bass isn't terrible on my M50x's but I am sure there are other cans around the same price range with a stronger bass emphasis?

      • Sorry, I wouldn't know - if I wanted to listen to bass heavy songs/music, I just make use of my own bookshelf speakers with subwoofer at home; otherwise I'll have to put up with my crappy $80 cans(well not really crappy as they've lasted a few years, disregarding physical damages and wear and tear of course) when going out and still wanting to listen to something so I don't get bored and I guess I can say I'm content with that even though I know the music/songs sound better with a proper stereo system.

Out of curiosity, what specific sub-genres of EDM do you listen to?

        • Mainly progressive/electro house, trance and techno. Speakers are a good idea however not as convenient in my situation as I would generally be listening to music while commuting or travelling. I'll probably just wait until Christmas sale before purchasing new headphones anyway

I saw these posted the other day, reviews sound good, if you can stretch a little.

  • The six sets of headphones below were chosen based on their features and customer reviews.

    2. Sennheiser HD 598 Over-Ear Headphones
    3. Monster DNA On-Ear Headphones (White Teal)
    4. SOL REPUBLIC 1430-06 Tracks Air Wireless On-Ear Headphones with A2 Sound Engine, Electro Blue

  • What about the Bauhn wireless headphones aldi have coming up August 27th? $40 for wireless sounds like its worth a try

  • I would suggest Sony MDRXB800 Extra Bass Over The Head 50mm Driver Headphones. These headphones would cost around at $90. These headphones are an over the head style with a tight acoustic seal and high sensitivity decibel. This particular model provides a powerful response while being conveniently dual folding with comfortable earpads.

  • apology for duplication

  • Well, try Sennheiser HD 380 Pro, amazing experience.
