  • on paper this is a bargain

remember the Netgear one that DSE screwed us all on for $280?

need to research a bit more to see if there's some massive gotcha somewhere

  • Mixed reviews from what I've seen, it's slow and has an awful interface, will have to see if you can just drop files onto it as a file server

    • +1

You've got to look at it in context. A lot of the criticism of this device is based around it costing $300 or $400. At that price the criticism is probably deserved. At $149 you can hardly complain. If your not inclined to build your own NAS from scratch this is a great alternative. If I didn't already own a Readynas duo I would pounce on this bargain.

      • Fair enough, from the benchmakrs it should be fast enough for fast ethernet so I've bought one

  • yeah i wouldn't get my hopes up thinking it has some rad features

if it can just manage to keep 2 hdds going in a non raid setup and push thru some decent Mb on a GbE network you should be happy

  • yeah read the interface is crap but you don't need to use it with the new firmware. The reviews I read is that the speed was pretty good.

  • i just ordered one… don't know why since i have two windows 2003 servers at home

should be a good store for your por^^^ linux isos and family photos

at worst, take the drive out and flip the shell on ebay etc.

  • Any info on whether its compatible with USB wireless card ?

  • It looks like you can do RAID1 (mirroring) with this thing (2 x sata drive bays).

I'm looking for a RAID setup for all my digital photos/music; I'm paranoid i'm going to lose this data containing kid photos etc.

I wonder however, if it is best to bite the bullet and spend a little more and get something like the Synology 209 straight from the USA which has far better speeds and capabilities, and is actively developed and enhanced.

  • I joined just to post this deal, but I couldn't since I hadn't been a member for 24 hours :( I thought it was a great deal as I missed out on the Harris Tech one posted about 6 months ago. I ordered 2.

  • I got this when it was having the same price in HT previously. Overall it is quite reliable, I have it on 24/7 from then and until now, didnt really have an issue.

The transfer speed is a bit slow than I expected on an GBE network, but, to me, is still acceptable with the price I paid for. Like elguapo said, if you are paying $300 or $400 for this, you will expect more.

The only downside I would see on this is there seems not to have find a way to hack its firmware yet. If it got a hackable firmware, it will well worth it.

  • Just to let everyone know. I just purchased one price matched at Officeworks for $149 as they included the cost of postage. Just in case people want to get thier hands on it without waiting for postage.

    • So you got this from OW in store not online? As I just visited my local OW and they told me they stop stocking Lynksys about 4 month ago.

  • This looks like a good deal for a home nas, I have ordered one.

  • Got 2 from officeworks! They look great for a small home nas

  • Not to be pouring cold water… ensure you have no intention to add any HDD to this unit. If you do, don't upgrade the firmware. Linksys support via Cisco sux!

    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Media-Hub/firmware-update-…

    • Will it support 2 x 2TB HDD's without upgrading the firmware?

      • your risk to take. also expect to be slow performance.

        • As far as I can tell, there is only a risk if you upgrade the firmware. I was just confirming this upgrade isn't required for increasing capacity to 4 gigs.

  • Not honored at OW Ferntree Gully VIC, guy said that it had to be accessible to anyone (he just tried to look it up via the wireless1 website and he got a price of $699). So he wouldn't honor it since it is a promo - no big deal will just order through wireless1…

  • can anyone tell me what price did office works have it before pricematch?

    • $259

  • What do they mean by this? "Enjoy your media anywhere in the world (fees may apply)". i want to be able to access my files every where in the world. can this one able to? thanks

    • (fees may apply) —> this usually means internet charges, telephone charges, download charges etc to get access to the files.

  • So does this work similarly to the WD media harddrives… I can store videos on this, plug it into a HD tv and go from there? Thanks guys

  • I won one of these a while back, and tried using it in a Mac environment. Mistake. However they are a little more useful in Windows only environments. The DLNA reliability is so/so, but I found that it struggled to play most common codecs to a playstation 3.

They have an extremely heavy web interface where you can configure the device and browse/watch media. Great for those who are low on technical skill.

Support for these devices is non existent @ their official support website. Read the instructions very carefully about the raid 0 / 1 stuff.

Hardware is reliable and rather quiet. Access to the drives is good. Transfer speeds are good enough at this price (keep in mind that these were over $700 when launched).

  • thanks ferny for the info

  • Is there anyway to get free shipping such as voucher for ozbargainers?

    • never mind .. went to OW and got it for $149.

      • OW didnt included shipping when price match?

        • They add the $149 plus shipping and beat it by 5%, so it's depends on your shipping fee

  • about the firmware

why don't you update with the original drive THEN add your 2 x 2Tb drives?

i doubt cisco will bother updating the firmware past 09!

  • Darn! Must be all gone. Now showing as $699.95 Was just about to head off to my local OW for a price match :(

    • OK make that $229 now + shipping which is still $20 less than OW but not so exciting

  • anyone got your order delivered?

    • Picked up mine from the post office today.

  • rang up today
apparantly stock is getting drop shipped hence they didn't have physical stock in store
will ring up on mon to follow up as they said it should be updated with consignment number by then

  • My unit arrived today. Seemed easy enough to set up. However, whenever I try to access the media hub, my laptop gets disconnected from my wifi network and has to reconnect again. Also, the web interface seems very slow handling even small files, so I don't see how it's going to handle large movies very well at all.
