Microwave Oven - I need one!

Hi all,

I am looking for a decent but reasonably priced microwave oven. It needs to be silver/stainless steel and medium to large size (whatever that is)!
Any bargains out there to be had??

Hey mate try standing in front of a mobile phone tower should do the trick!

On a serious note Aldi has one coming up on the special buys thing. It looks stainless they don't mention to many specs.

The things you want out of a decent microwave is

    1. easy to clean — stainless steel looks nicer but white ones are actually easier to clean, and they will look cleaner as well. My silver one has picked up scratches plus a lot of stains, which take a lot of elbow grease to remove. But… this is mostly a 'personal preference' kind of thing.

    2. Inverter. Always good to have, since it means the food cooks more evenly and it's pretty much a standard feature on any microwave over >$150.

    3. Big capacity but usable in confined spaces. A lot of Sharps and Panasonics are designed that way, to let you use it inside a cabinet or something. 23 litres is small, 27 litres considered medium and 40 litres is gigantic.

    4. Power level >800 watts is preferable, but you see a lot of kilowatt ones now.

The other features… one-touch pre-programmed buttons and sensors and other high-tech doodads are most features to make the microwave more expensive so it's more profitable to sell. You can pretty much skip these things as you'll never use them. Some microwaves also have convection features (e.g grill, bake) but they don't do as good a job as the dedicated unit.

If you want to grill a pizza, I recommend buying an actual benchtop oven for $100 dollars or so. This is the one I have and it's easy to clean too.

I was also looking a few months ago, and thanks to OZB community opinions and help, plus some searching, eventually settled on a solution. Here is a thread on microwaves from April, which has images and links to Choice magazine on this topic, in case you want to have a look.

My friend has one that he can give you for free.

His nephew went to his place the other day and put his pet rooster in the microwave and turned it on. Poor rooster died, but the microwave still works. My mate said the only thing is that anything you put in the microwave comes out tasting like cock. But you might like that.

One in the new Aldi catalogue, it comes with a grill and all for neunundneunzig dollars!

    • Doesn't say if it has an inverter?

  • Have an LG after using them in a busy cafe. Rounded back makes it piss easy to clean and helps maximise space.

Have a look at them in store you'll see what I mean

It's the only LG thing I've bought :P had it about 5 or 6yrs now!

I have a NEC stainless steel 27ltr microwave that I bought off ebay 5 years ago for 99cents. one of my best ebay scores.

  • Thanks guys for your assistance. I'll take a look at an LG one, white, with an inverter or the one at Aldi.

Most are good but avoid those designed with Nag beeping. i.e. Painful constant beeping reminders every minute, once any program that is run is finished. If I have thought it once I have thought it a thousand times, I would love to throw the dam thing into the trash because of this nagging feature. I am sure machines were invented to assist humans, not to annoy the bejesus out of them. (Take notes please LG)

  • A lot of them now days have a cool down fan cycle. My oven has this and it drives me crazy. I always buy one without this feature. You cant use the appliance again while this cool down cycle is running.

Honestly though, a microwve is a consumable - 3-5 years and you'll need a new one.

    Panasonic or Sharp.
The price will be pretty cheap and will last for ages, 10 years for sure.

I've had a S/S Sharp Carousel for 11 years. A powerful 1100W. Was expensive at the time as not many good brands had come out in S/S. I have a white one that still working - a bit older. I keep it in case this one stops working and keep my white goods till they 'die'. The downside with the white ones is that they go cream colour with age (due to sunlight). And don't think that there is anything that you can do once plastic goes off white with age.

      • … and our Sharp Carousel 1100W just died this evening. Had it for less than 6 years.

  • I'll take a trip to JBs today and see if they have a silver Panasonic one. I'm steering clear of those ones without the turntable though.

Head to your local retailer and pick the Samsung/LG/Panasonic/Sharp that you are happy with in terms of size and price.

They are all much of a muchness.
