Japan Snow Trip

Hi all,

Hoping for some advise and estimates if anyone has done anything similar.

I am looking to do a week of snowboarding somewhere, and considering Australia's prices i decided it would be best to go to Japan.
I am a beginner, and have no gear. Has anyone done any packages of sort? I would be looking to go early next year but am flexible.

Any tips how to get the best price? or any indication of how much i would be looking at?

Regards,
John

Jetstar are advertising package deals at the moment.

  • Its not just the price - Japan has a lot better snow/slopes than here. Check out Niseko - great place for boarding.

  • Yep it's hard to beat their deal! I'd go to Niseko, the Hilton deal is great.
Good location, Breakfast is amazing, Not bad hire gear from there.
    Outdoor onsen is awesome.

Short bus ride to Kutchan Township to buy noodles and beer if you are on a budget.
You could hire gear from town if you wanted to watch every dollar.

Snowboarding in Japan, what's not to love! (Except Hukuba and surrounds on any given weekend - reminds me of Mt Buller queues…)

Oh - one more thing, google is your friend for setup tips in powder snow - read up, and take a lesson or two for sure.
A few outings in Australia before hand will maximise the value of a Japan snow trip no end.

  • Awesome guys, much appreciated. Looking at niseko heard great things. I am just always concious of packages and them screwing me but it sounds good.

I'm thinking I would do some lessons there:) just make the most of it all.

Heads up most the deals seem to be from Cairns will chat to them directly and scope out pricing. But rough gauge seems 3k

  • Hotham here and Treble Cone in NZ both have a free lift pass for every day a car is hired through Jucy (I paid $21 per day for hire car+ lift pass!). A camper would be around $60 per day. Jucy also have pay 2 get 3 nights at bright. I think this would be the cheapest. At Hotham go to "snow monkey" near Jack Frost for hire (by far the cheapest). Or buy one through Gumtree. I bought a 2001 board for $60, had a ball with it. Used the snowprofessor videos online for lessons (but I could ski already). Did one run at Big D, found it easy and went straight to Heavenly Valley. Put the board on Gumtree on my last day and sold it for $80. Accommodation is around $100 per night, per person twin share up there. Or on a budget, a Jucy camper from the bottom would be the cheapest.

    • thanks for this. amazing to know. was contemplating NZ but timing clashes. would have to go start of 2017 so Japan seemed the most feasible.

  • Actually, I'm looking at doing a long weekend snow trip start of September, starting from adelaide. Deciding between Vic (1 hr flight to Melbourne, 5hrs to Hotham or maybe Baw Baw.
Or 3 hrs to Canberra, then 2hr drive to perisha/ thredbo.
Or fly to NZ, then a couple hours to treble cone.
    What does everyone recon?
