Travelling from Sydney to Orlando in January

Hi,

My partner and I are travelling to Orlando in mid-January for a wedding. We plan to be there for about a month and get in some sightseeing, Disney World and that sort of thing.
This is the first overseas holiday I've had to plan and it's all a bit overwhelming, so if anyone could give me some pointers I'd really appreciate it. What are the best sites for finding cheap flights? When should I be booking? Are there any airlines I should be avoiding? Are there any specific things I should be signing up to in preparation for going (discount cards etc)?

    skyscanner

Dep. Fri 13/Jan/2017 Ret. Fri 10/Feb/2017 $1014 PP China Southern Airlines

    Credit cards for travelling:
    citibank CC
    Bankwest platinum CC
28 degrees is ok for purchases but not ATM withdrawals

Start with a rough itinerary. and plan from there. don't try to "do everything". a month is ages and it would get tiring packing -travelling- unpacking every day. spend several to 5 days in each major place.

Good price with that China Southern flight. But it is about 6000 km further than if flying via LAX. I think there will be a sale on another airline that's good for travel in mid-Jan.

        for sure with another sale/airline.

flying to LA makes a nice stop over for a few days/week. then domestic flight to Orlando

    • I wasn't able to find that specific flight, but I'll keep an eye out on those sites.

Orlando is quite easy to get around however you will need a car. If you plan to visit the theme parks etc you will need a couple of weeks. I recommend you book a condo in a gated community in Kissimee. More comfortable and cheaper than a hotel room. From memory I think our family of 5 stayed at Windsor Hills.

January is peak period. If you're going to take a month, try to arrive as close to the wedding date as possible. That should ease the cost of the flights some what as flying home in Feb will be cheaper than flying home end of January (prices tend to drop after Australia Day).

    • I thought it would just be the start of January that was the worst, or does that continue through the mid month?

      • School holidays.

      • Yes it's much cheaper from about 16 January onwards. Have a look at the price graph on Google flights (just click in the date box)…

        https://www.google.com/flights/#search;f=SYD;t=MCO,SFB;d=201…

Also, Qantas has just announced a sale for $1049 return to Dallas… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/260209

Sydney to Dallas is coming up as $1049 return for 16 January to 16 February 2017. Unfortunately it's an extra ~$500 to Orlando. But you could try booking that leg with a cheaper airline or I think just wait for a different sale. Spirit Airlines will fly you one way from DFW to MCO for about $80USD including a bag.
