Best Budget Mechanical KB (Red/Black) Also, Should I Hold on on RX 480?

Hey OzB!

I am in the market for both an RX 480 and a mechanical keyboard. I am looking for a red/black mechanical keyboard under $100 preferably.
Also, should I buy an rx 480 now or wait for reference cards? If so, where is the most affordable currently? Keep in mind I have no intention of overclocking.

Also, 4GB or 8GB RX 480?

Cheers. :)

  • I recently got a Turtle Beach Impact 500 from Kogan's eBay store with a 20% discount. This is it here (currently out of stock though):

For the price - it's great. I use it as my work keyboard. I also have the Kogan branded one, which is not quite as good but it's in the same price range.

I have 4 mech keyboards and this is how I score them, so you get some idea.
    Ducky Shine 2: 9/10
    Steel Series 6Gv2: 6/10
    Turtle Beach Impact 500: 7.5/10
    Kogan Mech Keyboard: 6/10

  • Also, 4GB or 8GB RX 480?

Resolutions higher than 1080, such as 1440p — You should get a 8GB card

If res never higher than 1080p, 4GB card is good enough

If DirectX 11 games is all you play, you should buy the GTX 1060 instead of the RX 480.

If you want to play Vulkan enabled games and DirectX 12 games, the RX 480 is better. However, there aren't that many games on DX12 or Vulkan yet.

In Australia, there is no price advantage with the RX 480 — both the Green and Red cards cost the same here. In America it's a different story, the AMD is cheaper.

Benchmark comparing the two cards, with GOW, Ashes of Singularity and Tomb Raider.

  • There's a large difference in the weight/force required for actuation between red switches and black switches. Make sure you're comfortable typing for extended times on blacks switches if you choose them. I got a Ducky Shine 4 with clears (though admittedly the clears have a different force curve ~65g to get over the bump and bottoming out requires 90g or so) and its way too fatiguing for use at work.

I use a Ducky YOTG (brown switches) daily for work and I've since replaced the keycaps with PBT. The stabilisers are definitely different and better on the shift keys / larger keys as I don't get the same mushy feeling as I do from the Shine 3 and Shine 4.

    • Forgive me, I am clearly not too educated on the subject, I'm looking for a keyboard that is good for gaming but is also not too taxing for typing documents, etc.

I still want that mechanical feel though. Do you have any recommendations?

      Cheers.
