Recommend Me a Pair of Headphones?

hey everyone, technical amateur here,
I dont use headphones often but wouldnt mind a nice pair,
I use it on planes a lot with the tablet, so Iguess bluetooth is out of the question,

I really like the noise cancelling ones, I tried a few bose ones at JB hifi and they seemed really cool.

I dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair, but does anyone have a recommended model or type on a reaonsable price.

I really dont want to pay $300 extra because of a brand and turns out to be not so good

by the way, do the noise cancelling oens have better music quality,

Bass is important to me, and thats about it

I guess the buds are not the way to go
thanks everyone

    check out head-fi

  • I pretty sure the recommended cans would be the following…

    ATH-M50X
    Sennheiser HD598

I would personally add in the CAL!2 as well.

All of which can be had for <$300

If you want bass though, i think the ATH-M50X would be the one for you as its apparently pretty bassy

  • Active noise cancellation, on the other hand, involves some pretty interesting processes to cancel out sound. Along with the padding which passively blocks sound, microphones planted in the ear wells of headphones actively analyze the ambient noise level and reflect sound waves back into your ear that work to zap the outside noise. The goal is to hear nothing but the music, or whatever it is you're listening to.

    Whats eveeyones take on this?
How do you tell if the headphones has active or passive

    • If I'm not mistaken active requires batteries (the headphones usually have an on/off switch for the noise cancellation); uses noise/signals etc to cancel external noise. Passive is without any of that, attempting to get a good seal naturally to cancel external noise.

    • if the headphones advertises as 'noise-cancelling' - this is active. Otherwise noise isolating is passive.

  • you can use bluetooth on board a plane :) just not during takeoff and landing… I'm also looking for a new pair of wireless headphones WITHOUT noise cancelling :( They make me feel sick.

    • Can you use bluetooth headphones for a surface tablet?
I got one of the first gen ones

      • yeah absolutely.

  • thanks eveyrone,

does anybody have any tips on how on earth to decide between a $99 vs $199 VS $250 one,

ideally the cheaper the better, I know you get what you pay for, but at this rate im likely to end up choosing based on price, ie assume that a $250 one will be better than a $150 based on price alone,

I guess im looking for active noise cancelling, bluetooth, good bass, best quality,
not fussed about brand as long as it s good , nor design

  • Try before you buy if possible.
I have > $100 phones and only use my on ear super light old tech $20 headphones Philips sbc hl140 as I can wear them all day and they make singing along sound better. So whatever works for you.
