Which Credit Card with Free Travel Insurance?

Hi all,

Which credit card is best to use for travel insurance? I have a Bankwest Platinum, however the prepaid travel costs need to exceed $600 per person to activate the insurance. Being an Ozbargainer I hardly ever reach this price range…

I am mainly interested in the overseas medical insurance, not too fussed about excess. It's just in case of a real emergency. Not interested in luggage, cancellation etc.

Free or low annual fee would be preferred.

I was hoping somebody can recommend one with low or no amount necessary to activate the insurance. I will check the small prints.

    Bank of Melbourne:

To be eligible for this complimentary overseas travel insurance, before leaving Australia on an overseas journey, you must have a return overseas travel ticket, and need to have prepaid at least A$500 of your travel costs using your eligible card. Travel costs include:

    Return overseas travel tickets
    Airport/departure taxes
    Prepaid overseas accommodation
    Prepaid overseas itinerary items.

Still to high for me $500 prepaid travel cost spend necessary

Commonwealth bank , no spend necessary . I rarely spend what used to be the required money on my trips or I put it on my 28 degrees card for cheaper exchange rates. And extra bonus you can use the American Express lounge for free in Sydney twice a year with their platinum card.

    No travel cost for commbank.

    • Yes, Commbank, it is handled by Allianz, free travel activation required (on line form). If someone is interested: goods insurance (like damaged notebook, for example) are NOT new for old replacement, they calculate value of goods based on the original price and age.

Most AMEX cards have some sort of travel insurance - just need to check the fine print for details.

  • Thanks guys, I have applied for a CBA Gold card.

Received the CBA Gold Credit Card with free travel insurance which I activated correctly for our trip to Japan. Flight back was delayed by almost 30 hours due to bad weather (typhoon). Will try to claim my additional expenses which were not covered by the airline.
My understanding is that there is no excess for travel delay claims.
Will report back how it goes.

    • Any updates?
