You can get some amazing games pretty cheaply. There are not a huge amount of truly free games that you don't spend all your time grinding for levels\currency
Grab Spec Ops: The Line on the $1 tier of humblebundle at the moment ( https://www.humblebundle.com/2k-games-bundle )
Bioshock Triple Pack on sale at greenmangmaing.com for around $13
Batman Arkham Asylum or City frequently drop to around $5 during sales
FTL (Taster Than Light) can be got for a couple of dollars
The following can all be had for less than $10 during sales:
Tomb Raider, Dishonoured, Elder Scrolls-Skyrim, Farcry 3, The Orange Box (containing all the Half Life and Portal games), X-Com: Enemy Unknown, Left 4 Dead (1 or 2), Max Payne 3, Metro 2033 and Last Light (Get them in the Metro Redux Pack), Orks Must Die 1 + 2Also +1 for Team Fortress as a fully free game and possibly Evolve - Stage 2
Trove - been playing since steam release, quit after 6 months and now back onto it.
Team Fortress 2 is a must free to play game imo.
Its hard recommend without knowing what type of games you are looking for.
