Dental membership plans?

Wondering anyone has one of these dentacare or smile.com.au.
Have no extras but both wife and i may need sone fillings soon and wondered if worth having or which of the above two where best.

I know that smile does not have a dentist near by about 19km away where as dentacare has one very local.

Whats your thoughts.

Funny thing is Lisa seems to be the same age like forever… so she isn't getting the Braces off anytime soon.

  • I have Smile and it is great.

What I did though was I also joined HIF.com.au Extras Saver Options as well. (A Perth Based Private Health Insurance Fund and you can join Extras only (2 Months qualify on General Dental).

Smile offers immediate "cover" or rather a discounted List Rate and you get a temporary card to print out and use while they sent you a "real" plastic one in the mail.

It is worth phoning the Dentist you propose to use even if they are on the Smile.com.au list to confirm.
(or even ask Smile.com.au if there is one nearer to where you live).

I also have found it cost effective to join HIF.com.au Extras even with the two month to qualify they are super to deal with.

So, I pay the Dentist the Smile.com.au rate and then claim whatever back from HIF.com.au

HIF Extras Saver Options is about $240 a year.

Dental Benefits under HIF Extras are at http://www.hif.com.au/health-insurance/extras-cover/dental-b…

    • So what cover do you have?

Im a bit confused on the what they pay and what you pay looking at it.
Im also unsure if to get couple or family have daugher who is turning 4 and son 6 months.
Daughter not got adult teeth yet but aint kids free upto certain age?
I know being a low earner she gets upto i think $1000 free treatment not sure if thats to last upto age of 18 or something.
But used part of it recently to get her first check up all good.
And of course bub no teeth yet so wondering if family one any point.

Funds are pretty tight so the less the better but not something pointless.

I do already have ambulance cover with bupa which i would need to check when next due again im sure later in yr.
So if getting extras then this be dropped as its included.

I do know daugher had eye test and needs to see specialist on waiting list and possibly need glasses.
Wife wears them from time to time and i in past few medicals for work have been asked if i wear any. Yet to get eye test so may need myself.

Its been a few years since i had dental work and im sure may need some fillings wife is starting to complain about a couple and may also need some.
So whatever i get is there a limit to what we both get back being new and is it each or per person.

Smile is not with any dentisr near us about 20km awsy but dentacare is but wondering how both compare.

It was something i was going to get 3 yrs ago extras but never bothered but maybe best to get.
Just unsure what level of cover to get.

      • Hi,

I went with HIF Saver Options, I guess it was affordable (as a single) and it included in some Optical (while the level below called "Vital" Options doesn't.

Anyhoo, Ambulance is included (again after 2 months) so if you were looking at that, let it run with for 2 months with BUPA and then cross over so you are still covered.

There are limits so for General Dental Annual Limit per Person is $750, so although it may not cover everything, it makes things less worse. This limit amount increases each year by $100 to $1250 for 5+years per person.

There are limits for Optical too, with $110/year Up to 5 years, Over 5 years: $121/year per person.

I looked at Dentacare and my recollection is that it was quite strong in Melbourne and some places, but less of a presence near me.
But, of course you have to think about convenience too and it isn't worth driving way out of your way, especially if you are having Dental work done.

I'm pretty sure Children are covered for Dental under:
        https://www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/medicare/…

On an absolute value basis, Dentacare or Smile are not going to cover you beyond being a Dental Discount Scheme.

Being single, Smile offered me immediate cover which enabled me to get urgent dental work done at a lower cost and then HIF.com.au picked up a lot of the rest, not all of it, but most of it.

That said, given your circumstances, it comes down to what gives you the best bang for the money. I reckon (if you can wait) the two months after joining HIF as a Couple and then claim on your General Dental and whatever you can on the Optical is the go. You also neatly fold your Ambulance Cover into it as well.

I'd check though if the HIF.com.au Extras Ambulance Cover extends to your Children as well though. Does your BUPA Ambulance Policy cover everyone or just you… You want to be certain that whatever you do your Ambulance Cover is intact, this may mean taking out Extras for Everyone.

Otherwise, look at the Dentacare as a short term measure to get the discounted Dental at a Dentist near you.

        • Thanks need to look into it more I know daughter and wife are covered by ambo with Bupa but now that you say it we have a 6 month old and its slipped my mind on him, daughter was around when I took it out but he was not.

I will look into the extras you say see as for the smile thing nearest dentist for us is 20km away that uses it when searching online but Dentacare has one more or less a few streets away so may need to be Dentacare.
Thing is smile offers half price second year where as Dentacare does not might need haggle with Dentacare for better price

    • this is only good if there are dentist near you, smile has one but 20km away and there are tons of other dentists in and around my area.

  • I like the look of the saver option price wise but I noticed it has a few things not covered on it where as next one up special has.

Inlay / Onlay Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered
Denture, Crown, Bridge Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered
Periodontic and Endodontic Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered Not covered
Orthodontic lifetime limit and installment payments

    What are these?

I have no idea what state my teeth are in as been a while but I'm sure there be a few fillings and wife needs a couple too and the reason for looking into extras, daughter might need glasses I still to get eye test and may need, wife uses glasses and can gain from it.
Its how many fillings I need, and how many wife needs, i have two crowns at front which might one day need stuck back in and hopefully last a while yet.
Daughter is fine just had check up and is only 4 still to get adult teeth and son who is only 6 months so no good to him.

Being out of work the lower the better but unsure if saver or special and say you had saver one year can it be upgraded to special next?

  • AHM 50% refund, no wait period for general dental. . I think it was about $8 per week.

Or if you can wait 2 months, NIB 60% rebate for ~$6 per week.

Get your work done then cancel insurance because their customer service does suck.

    • Sorry, just piggy backing on this and asking you because I'm looking at the NIB plan now…

Say you go a couple or family plan - do you know if the annual limit is per person or for the plan as a whole (ie. $600 limit - is this $600 a person or $300 a person if two claim evenly).

  • "Dental membership plans"

These are marketing companies that do not provide anything more than a referral. You pay the company to put you in touch with a dentist that has paid to get the referral.

These membership companies gets paid from both parties for a service no one needed. Find someone you can trust and go from there.
